PATENT JOHN B. COLLIN, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SANDING DEVICE FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,039, dated January23, 1883.
Application filed October 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, JOHN B. COLLIN, of Altoona, county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices for Locomotives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improved method of opening the pipes of a sand-delivery apparatus for locomotives when the same are clogged, and for keeping them clean an dry, in order that the sand may flow freely to the rail when desired.
It consists also in the combination, with a proper sand-holdin g receptacle having suitable valves and delivery -pipes, of an airprcssure-supply pipe opening into the delivery-pipes at or near the source of sand-supply, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation of a locomotive having my improved apparatus applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional elevation through the sand-box.
To enableothers skilled in the art to understand my method and to carry it practicall y into "ii 'ect, I will proceed to describe the same full iin connection with the proper apparatus f r practicing the same.
A general statement of my method may be made as follows: Affair -current is introduced into the delivery-pipe at or near the source of sand-supply, and is caused to pass entirely through the pipe. By means of this the pipe is opened when choked by the collection of moisture, which causes the sand to adhere to the sides of the pipe, and is made clean and dry, so that the sand may flow freely to the rail.
The following apparatusis employed to carry this method practically into effect.
A represents a sand-box, of the usual wellknown or any other proper construction, which is located in any convenient position on top of the boiler, and provided upon each side with one or more delivery-pipes, a (6, leading to points directly in front of the drivingwheels, in the manner well understood.
B B represent valves, of any suitable construction. in the sand-box, adapted to control the openings into the pipes a a, and b a"; rod extending from the valves to a point in convenient proximity to the engineer.
0 represents a pipe leading from the airdrum of the air-brake apparatus, or from any other proper source of pressure-supply, which is provided at the sand-box with the branches 0 0, opening into the delivery-pipes a. a in close proximity to the valves, as shown in Fig. 3.
c representsacock in the main pipe 0, which is located in position for convenient manipulation by the engineer when desired.
0 represents a cock in each branch pipe 0, as shown.
The operation is substantially as follows: When it is desired to use the sand the rod 1) is actuated in the usual manner by the engineer to open the valves and permit the flow of sand from the box through the deliverypipes to the rail. It, however, the sand fails to start, as often happens, owing to the choking of the pipes by the collection of moisture in them, the cock 0 is opened, and the pressure from the air-drum being then admitted into the delivery-pipes the pipe is opened and the sand permitted to flow to the rail. By means of this current, also, the pipes may be kept clean and dry, so that clogging will not occur. lfdesired, all the pressure may be concentrated upon one of the delivery-pipes by closing the cock 0 in the opposite branch pipe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The described method of opening the pipes of a sand-delivery apparatus for locomotives and keeping them clean and dry, consisting in the introduction ofan air-current into the pipes at or near the source of sandsupply, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a proper sand-holding receptacle having suitable valves and delivery-pipes, an air-pressure-supply.pipeopening the branches 0 a and cooks 0 0 as deing into the delivery-pipes at the source of scribed. 10
