UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BUBLINGAME, OF EXETER, MASSACHUSETTS.
'SECTIONAL STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,031, dated January 23, 1883.
Application filed October 30,1882. (No model.) I
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BURLINGAME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Exeter, in the county of Rockingham and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam- Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My improvements relate to a class of castiron sectional steam-generators composed of a number of rectangular boxes united by suitable connections, in number according to the power or volume of steam required, each section being a complete generator, an instance of the class of generators to which my improvements pertain being shown in Figure l of the drawings as a rectangular box, A,
'closed on all'sides, and having a series of openings, at a, 850., in opposite sides, united by tubes to prevent communication between the inside and exterior of the box, these openings and tubes being to permit of expansion and contraction of the iron, to avoid fracture of the latter, and to provide additional radiatingsurfaces.
The object of my invention is to provide greater radiating surface and lessen to a marked degree liability of fracture of the met al from expansion and contraction, and I effect my object by dividing the box horizontally into two boxes of smaller capacity and uniting these two boxes by a series of hollow intercommunicating columns or tubes of wrought metal.
The drawings accompanying this specification. represent, in Fig. l, a perspective view of a steam-generator as heretofore manufactured. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of a generator containing my improvements.
thus made being substantially like those heretofore in use, except that it is of much less height, and hence ofl'ers much less area of metal in onecasting to be subjected to danger of fracture by expansion and contraction.
0 represents a second hollow rectangular case or box of the same size and shape in horizontal section as the box B, but preferably of much less height, the box G being disposed above or alongside the box B, as the case may be, and connected with the latter by tubes or hollow columns 0 c, &c.,of wroughtdron, which are erected upon the lower box, and unite the two by suitable screw-connections, d e, &c.
The two boxes B O, united by the columns a c, constitute a single complete generator, and
the sides or ends of each box, as the case may be, are to be provided with inlet and outlet steam-ports, having screw-th readed nipples, by which two sections may be united in manner as heretofore generally practiced in generators of this class. The comparatively small area .of the boxes B G lessens to a greatdegree liability of fracture of the metal by alternate expansion and contraction. The wrought-metal tubes 0 provide extended heat-radiating surface, and are proof against injury from expansion and contraction.
I claim- A set of detachable tubular columns,in combination with two rectangular boxes connected by said columns, said boxes being constructed with openings through them from side to side, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BURLINGAME.
