Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF, OF UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO.
TOBACCO-POUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'271,028, dated January 23, 1883,
- Application filed October 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. BRINK- ERHOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have inventeda new and valuable Improvement in Tobacco- Pouches; and I do hereby declare that thefollowiu g is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the anuexeddrawings, making a part of this specification, and to the lettersand figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings'is a representation ot'thisiuventioniu perspective, and shows the finished pouch. Fig. 2 is also a perspective, and shows the pouch open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 4. shows a modification, and-is represented as pressed flat, ready for packing. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same, and represents the blank.
This invention has relation to paper pouches for holding tobacco; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement hereinafter fully described and claimed.
g In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the blank form of which the pouch l. have designed can be made. It consists of a single piece of tough paper, having the back I), end tabs, 0, bottom (1, front 0, and flap z. The bottom is designed to be folded inward along the line-g, and is usually provided with the end notches, it, to receive the inward folds of the end tabs, 0, these being folded obliquely along the lines it, which diverge from the upper to the lower ends. When folded the edges of the end tabs are securely gummed or pasted to the front, as at It, forming the complete pouch P. The front c of the pouch is usually.
provided with a short vertical central slit, l, and the angular corners formed. on each side of said slit are designed to be turned downward and outward in filling the pouch, facilitating the operation as well as the act of removing any portion of the contents of the pouch for use.
This pouch is large and 'roomy toward its base, while its middle is contracted and kept always closed, so that there is no liability of escapeot' the contents therefrom. It is convenient in use, preserves the tobacco, and keeps it sweet and clean. The paper will absorb the extra moisture which tends to deteriorate the tobacco, and will thus keep it in wholesome condition.
When filled the pouches can be pressed oompactly in rectangular form, so that they can be easily packed in boxes for transportation, it being designed that the tobacco shall be put up for sale in these pouches, so that the user obtains a new pouch with each purchase.
The pouches should be made of different sizes, according to the quantities generally required by different persons at one time. The prices may be printed on the flap in. series, one below the other, as indicated at m, so that the price of each special package can be indicated by cutting off the higher figures.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A paper tobacco-pouch made of one piece, consisting of the back b, end tabs, 0., folded obliquely, bottom 01, slitted front 0 l, and flap z, substantially as specified.
2. The blank to for a paper tobacco-pouch, consisting of the back b, end tabs, 0, provided with oblique folding-lines h h, bottom (I, folding-line g, notches n n, slitted front 6 l, and flap a, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
