1 Claim. (Cl. 215-46) The present invention relates to new and useful 1111- provements in bottle caps of the crimped type and more particularly to means for easily and quickly removing the cap without the use of a separate bottle opener or other tool.
An important object of the invention is to provide a pull tab clamped beneath the cap at the time the bottle is sealed and folded on top thereof in an unobstructing position when the bottle is handled, and which may be gripped to remove the cap.
Another object is to score the portion of the cap under which the tab is clamped to facilitate breaking thereof to easily remove the cap.
A further object is to provide a device of the character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter d:- scribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the tab clamped under the bottle cap;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the tab pulled to break the cap;
Figure 3 is a top plan view;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line i-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view at right angles to Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the tab.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a bottle cap of the crimped skirt type adapted for attaching to the neck of a bottle 6 and with a sealing cork 7 under the cap.
The skirt 8 has a pair of circumferentially spaced slits therein, as at 9, whereby to form a separate arcuate skirt portion in the skirt 8, and the top of the cap 5 is formed with a pair of non-radial score lines 11 therein extending inwardly of said top from the ends of the separate skirt portion and which converge relatively toward the sepited rates Patent 0 2,709,019 Patented May 24, 1955 arate skirt portion with contiguous ends spaced apart, said score lines 11 forming with said separate skirt portion a crescent-shaped cap portion 10 connected to said top intermediate said ends of the score lines 11 by a connecting web 12. The crescent-shaped cap portion 1 is frangible along said lines 11.
An elongated malleable metal tab 13 is flared at one end 14 which is placed under the skirt portion of the cap and clamped thereunder when the cap is crimped on the bottle, the material of the clamped end of the tab conforming to the crimping to mutually bind the cap and tab. The outer end of the tab is bent inwardly on top of the cap to provide a finger grip 15' which thus occupies an unobstructed position while the bottle is being stored or handled.
In order to remove the cap 5, the finger grip 15 of the tab 13 is pulled upwardly to sever the portion ll) along its score lines 11, as shown in Figure 2, and the cap may thus be easily pulled free by a continued pulling force on the tab.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A circular bottle cap comprising a top having a skirt adapted to be crimped on the neck of a bottle, said skirt being provided with a pair of circuinferentially spaced slits therein forming a separate arcnate portion in said skirt, the top of the cap being provided with a pair of non-radial, straight score lines extending from the ends of the skirt portion inwardly of said top and converging reltaively toward skirt portion with contiguous ends spaced apart and forming with said skirt portion a crcscent-shaped cap portion frangible along said score lines, and connected to said top between said ends of the score lines for bending upwardly on said top to disengage said skirt portion from said neck, and a pull tab fixed to said skirt portion for manipulation to bend said cap portion.
