METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A HAND KNITTING MACHINE AND THE PRODUCT THEREOF Filed Jan. 26, 1954 IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEYS METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A HAND KNIT- TING MACHINE AND THE PRODUCT THEREOF Makoto Tanaka, Akasaka, Minato-Ku, Tokyo, Japan Application January 26, 1954, Serial No. 406,239
2 Claims. (Cl. 66-82) This invention relates to an improvement in a method of manufacturing a hand knitting machine and the product thereof, and has for its object to provide a hand knitting machine of the type which may be assembled and manufactured easily without trouble so as to make it durable and also to enable it for attaining the production of a large quantity.
This invention consists of a method of manufacturing a hand knitting machine characterized by providing an elongated wooden stand forming a knitting needle bed with a small cut out portion and a large cut out portion at its front underside, bending an elongated metal plate into a cover plate in the form of an inverted U letter shape so as to provide at a lower end of its front vertical portion with an inwardly directed flange and at a lower end of its rear vertical portion with an outwardly directed flange, fitting said inwardly directed flange to said small cut out portion, fixedly mounting said outwardly directed flange on an upper surface of said wooden stand at its rear part and bolting a knitting needle mounting wooden plate to the underside of said large cut out portion of the wooden stand.
Also, this invention consists of a hand knitting machine characterized by an elongated wooden stand forming a knitting needle bed having at the front underside a small cut out portion and a large cut out portion providing steps, an elongated metal plate forming a cover plate bent in the form of an inverted U letter shape soas to provide a lower end of its front vertical portion with an inwardly directed flange and a lower end of its rear vertical portion with an outwardly directed flange, said inwardly directed flange being fitted to said small cut out portion, said outwardly directed flange being fixedly mounted on an upper surface of said wooden stand at its rear part and a knitting needle mounting wooden plate being bolted to the underside of said large cut out portion of the wooden stand.
In order to facilitate the understanding of this invention, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred embodiment for carrying out the present method, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a part of a hand knitting machine manufactured according to this invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a part of a metal cover plate in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of an elongated wooden stand forming a knitting needle bed, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part of a knitting needle mounting wooden plate.
In the drawings, a knitting needle bed 1 is made of an elongated wooden stand having at its front underside a small cutout portion a and a large cutout portion b provided so as to make steps, and a cover plate 2 is made of an elongated metal plate bent in the form of an inverted U letter shape. Said cover plate 2 is provided at a lower end of its front vertical portion with an inward directed flange c' and at a lower end of its rear vertical portion d with an outward directed flange d Also, said cover plate 2 has at its upper side a plurality of slots e,
2,708,839 Patented May 24, 1955 and at its front vertical portion c and its rear vertical portion d a plurality of holes 1. Said slots e are arranged in parallel relation to each other and in the same vertical line as the holes f. These slots 2 and holes 1 receive thread drawing needles 8 as later described and serve to guide them before and behind when a cam member not shown is reciprocated longitudinally on the cover plate 2. A knitting needle mounting plate 3 is made of a wooden plate and has a plurality of transverse grooves g formed in parallel relation to each other at its upper surface in which knitting needles 5 are secured as later set forth.
According to this invention, as the small cut out portion a of the knitting needle bed 1 is made to be fitted upon the lower inwardly directed flange c of the front vertical portion 0, the inwardly directed flange c may be easily fitted in the small cut out portion a. Also, the front vertical portion 0 is pressed against a front end of the knitting bed 1 and at the same time the rear vertical portion a is positioned on an upper surface of the knitting needle bed 1 at its rear part so as to fix it thereon through the outwardly directed flange d bolted by bolts 4. After the knitting needles 5 have been fitted in the transverse grooves g of the knitting needle mounting plate 3, said mounting plate 3 is pushed against the large cut out portion b from the underside thereof for fixing it by means of bolts 6. The cover plate 2 has at its opposed ends fixed thereon rails 7 arranged in parallel relation to each other, which rails serve to guide a slide comprising the cam member not shown to be slid on the upper surface of the cover plate 2.
Each of the thread drawing needles 8 passes through the holes 7 in the front and rear vertical portions c and d of the cover plate 2 and has a projecting portion h ex tended through the guide slot e in the cover plate 2. Said projecting portion h may be moved in front and in the rear when the slide comprising the cam member not shown is slid longitudinally on the cover plate 2 reciprocally. A coil spring 9 is arranged in compressed state around each of the needles 8 between the front vertical portion c of the cover plate 2 and a lower part of the projecting portion h. A base plate 10 of the machine is hinged at 11 to a rear under part of the knitting bed 1 so as to open it or close it when desired.
As above described, in this invention, the elongated wooden stand forming the knitting needle bed 1 is formed at its front underside with the small cut out portion a and the large cut out portion b so as to make steps, and to said small cut out portion a, the inwardly directed flange c at the lower end of the front vertical portion 0 of the cover plate 2 is fitted rigidly, and also the cover plate 2 is fixed suitably on the upper surface of the knitting needle bed 1 by fixing the outwardly directed flange d of its rear vertical portion d by means of the bolts 4. Accordingly, the assembly and the manufacture of the parts in this invention are made very easy, and the mounting portion of the rear vertical portion d may be accommodated to circumstances, so that unskilled persons can assemble the parts easily.
What I claim is:
l. A method of manufacturing a hand knitting machine characterized by providing an elongated wooden stand forming a knitting needle bed with a small cut out portion and a large cut out portion at the front underside, bending an elongated metal plate into a cover plate in the form of an inverted U letter shape so as to provide at a lower end of its vertical portion with an inwardly directed flange and at a lower end of its rear vertical portion with an outwardly directed flange, fitting said inwardly directed flange to said small cut out portion, fixedly mounting said outwardly directed flange on an upper surface of said wooden stand at its rear part and bolting a knitting needle mounting wooden plate to the underside of said large cut out portion of the wooden stand.
2. A hand knitting machine characterized by an elongated wooden stand forminga knitting needle bed having at the front underside a small eut out portion and alarge cut out portion providing steps, an elongated metal plate forming a coverplate bent in the form of an inverted U letter shape so asrto provide a lower end of its front vertical portion with an inwardly directed flange and a lower end of its rear verticalportion with an outwardlydirected flange, said inwardly directed flange-being fitted to said small cut out portion, said outwardly directed flange being fixedly mounted on an upper surface of said wooden stand at its rear part and a knitting needle mounting Wooden plate being bolted to the underside of said large cut out portion of the wooden stand.
