Abstract

825,342. Making needle beds for knitting machines. EMPISAL (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. March 31, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 10268/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A method of manufacturing for a knitting machine needle bed, of the kind in which each needle is guided for sliding movement and has a butt which extends through a slot in the bed-plate for engagement by the saddle, consists in forming a swage in the bed plate between and parallel with each pair of slots. Parallel swages 12 are pressed into a metal plate 10, slots 14 are then pressed between them and the longitudinal edges 16 of the plate are bent downwardly to accommodate a backing plate 18, which is secured to the plate by two bars 19 soldered in position and then has slots 20 stamped in it to register with the slots 14 by discs passed through the slots 14. A base-plate 22 is secured to the plate 10 by screws 24 and studs 25 and is formed with tongues 28 which define parallel grooves to guide needles 32, which are maintained in their respective grooves and against a tensioning rod 38 by a resilient pad 34 located by a channel 36 pressing against the backing plate 18 and by pins 37 projecting from the base plate 22 at regular intervals.
