COVER FOR SELF-BINDING HARVESTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,862, dated January 16, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Cover for Self-Binding Harvesting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to covers for the canvas part of self-binding harvesting-machines;

I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an under side view of the entire cover. Fig. 2 is a side view of said cover, looking toward square half of cover under side down.

A is my canvas-cover, cut at an angle on elevator side, which admits the same to so con- 0 form to the platform part of harvester and to the elevator part in such a manner that said cover works closely to the canvas of the harvester with a proper fall or angle to shed water, and yet does not touch the canvas.

5 a a are eyelets around edges of cover, to button over buttons or hooks placed on the outside of the timber part of harvester at such points as will allow the cover to be folded around the frame-work of machine.

B is a wooden roller fastened to that part of the cover which lies over the sickle-bar of harvester. Said roller prevents the cover from being cut or damaged by said sickle-bar, while the iron rings 1) b, that are secured to the roll- 5 er B, slip over the fingers or guards of the sicklebar and hold this part of cover in proper position. Roller B is further used to roll'up cover on when not needed on machine. In this case the part of cover cut angling is laid over square half and the folded cover rolled up on roller B and held together by straps and buckles O G.

D is a flap or piece of canvas, that is so attached to the under side of main part of the cover that it works at a right angle with said cover, said flap being supplied with eyelets, so that it can be securely fastened to theunder side of the timbers at the grain-wheel side of harvester, thus making my cover. tight at this point, where otherwise, on account of the iron- I work of machine, the main cover could not be fastened and provide protection.

lam aware that prior to my invention covers for self-binding harvesters have been used; but said covers were made so as to cover all parts of the machine, the canvas part as well as elevator, &c., making them so large and unwieldly that the cover would invariably sag in places and form bags, which would hold the rain directly over the canvas of the machine until by percolation the water would drop onto and render unfit for use the canvas, which then had to be removed, dried, and readjusted" to the machine.

The manner in which my cover is fastened to the machine prevents said cover from touching the canvas of the machine, so that the dampness of the cover cannot communicate with the canvas.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a cover for the canvas part of self-binding harvesting-machines, the combination of cover A, eyelets'a a, roller B, rings 11 b, straps and buckles O O, and flap D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
