May 17, 1955 MEANS FOR PROTECTING A FLANGE OR LIKE DISC-SHAPED BODY Filed Oct. 18, 1951 United States Patent 0 MEANS FOR PROTECTING A FLANGE OR LIKE DISC-SHAPED BODY Jacob Das, Hengelo, Netherlands, assignor to G. Dikkers & Co. N. K, Hengelo, Netherlands, a company of the Netherlands Application October 18, 1951, Serial No. 251,949
Claims priority, application Netherlands September 24, 1951 1 Claim. (Cl. 138-96) This invention relates to means for protecting a flange or like disc-shaped body against damage of the machined face of the flange during transport in unpacked condition.
The invention has for its object to procure a protection for such disc-shaped bodies or flanges which is very strong and may also be used with flanges not provided with bolt holes. According to the invention the protecting means consist of a disc of card or hard board adapted to be placed on the flange and covering substantially the whole surface area of the flange, and further consist of a flexible metallic strip provided with a continuous series of perforations, the ends of said strip covering each other to such an extent that at least two perforations are in register for accommodating at least one connecting member the width of said strip not exceeding the thickness of the flange and the strip having projections at both of its longitudinal edges, the projections at one of the edges of the strip being bent against the disc covering the flange and the projections at the other edge of the strip being bent against the opposite face of the flange. In this way the protecting disc is firmly clamped on to the machined face of the flange so that said-face is effectively protected. The projections at one of the edges of the strip which are bent against the disc of hard board may advantageously be formed as a continuous tootbing so that the disc on its whole circumference is protected by said teeth.
The protecting means according to the invention are not only adapted for individual flanges but also for flanges of cocks, stop valves, valve casings, connecting pieces for pipe lines, pumps and other flanged apparatus. In said instance the protection of the flange or flanges prevents dirt from entering the flanged body during its transport or storing.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows a preferred embodiment of the protecting means according to the invention for a flange of a valve casing,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the valve casing with the protecting means on one of the flanges.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the protected flange and Fig. 3 shows a part of the connecting strip.
The flange 2 of the valve casing 1 which has a bore 3 is covered by disc 4 of hard board or other strong sheet material. Placed around the flange 2 is a strip 5 of hoop iron having triangular teeth 6 at one of its edges and tongues 7 at the opposite edge. Moreover the strip is provided with a continuous series of perforations 8. The strip has such a length that the ends thereof cover each other and two perforations at one of the ends coincide with those at the opposite end. A split pin 9 is put through each pair of coinciding perforations so that the strip is connected to form a ring. The triangular teeth 6 are subsequently beaten down on to the disc 4 by means of a hammer or bent down by a die or a roller, whereas the relatively narrow tongues 7 may be bent against the back of the flange by hand. Each of the tongues 7 is provided with one or more small holes 10 so that a metal wire may be tacked through said holes in order to prevent the tongues from bending back.
The strip 5 may be manufactured in a continuous length and be cut in suitable pieces corresponding to the diameter of the flanges to be protected. The same strip may be used for flanges of different thickness and also protecting discs 4 of various thickness may be used.
What I claim is:
Means for protecting a flange or like disc-shaped body comprising a disc of strong non-metallic material which is placed on the front face of the flange to be protected and covers substantially the whole surface area of the flange and its bore, and further comprising a flexible metallic strip provided with a continuous series of perforations throughout its length, the said strip being adapted to be placed on and to cover at least a part of the width of the outer face of the said flange, the ends of said strip covering each other to such an extent that at least two perforations are in register for accommodating at least one connecting member, the said strip loosely surrounding the periphery of the said flange, the width of said strip not exceeding the thickness of the flange and said strip having projections at both of its longitudinal edges,'said projections at one of the edges of the strip being formed as a continuous toothing and being bent against the disc covering the flange and said projections at the other edge of the strip consisting of a plurality of relatively narrow tongues and being bent :against the opposite face of the flange, in order to secure the said disc to the said flange.
