Description

May 3, 1955 G. c. FRICKE FILTER SUPPORT Filed Oct. 15, 1949 6 )"61 FP/mf BY United States Patent FILTER SUPPORT Guy C. Fricke, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Bendix Aviation Corporation, South Bend, Ind., a corporation of Delaware Application October 15, 1949, Serial No. 121,531
1 Claim. (Cl. 248--313) The present invention relates to filtering devices, and more particularly to a supporting means for said devices.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a relatively simple, easily fabricated supporting means for a filtering device which can be readily assembled on a filtering device and installed on an engine or the like, and which will give long trouble-free service. Further objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a filtering device including the present supporting means assembled in operative position; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bottom of the filtering device showing an additional view of the supporting means.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, a filtering device is shown mounted on an engine or the like and for the purpose of the present disclosure may be con sidered a conventional oil filter for the lubricating system of an internal combustion engine, the oil entering the filter casing 12 through an inlet passage 14 in the side wall of said casing and leaving through an outlet passage 16 in the bottom of the casing, a drain plug 18 being provided on one side of the bottom for use in cleaning the device after it is installed. The casing is closed and sealed by a cover 20 shown secured to said casing by a bayonet type retaining means 22. Although the internal construction of the present filtering device is not important to the present invention, the details of the filtering device are shown in my eopending application Serial No. 122,517, filed October 20, 1949, Patent No. 2,671,564.
The supporting means or fixture for securing the device in operative position on an engine or the like conr sists of open circumferential band 24 extending around the central portion of casing 12 and having outwardly turned ends to form lugs 26 and 28 for engaging a flat mounting surface of an engine. Holes 30 are provided in said lugs for mounting screws or bolts 32. are connected to the band by straight sections 34 and The lugs 5 2,707,611 Patented May 3, 1955 2 36 which contain holes 38 and 40, respectively, for receiving a bolt 42 threadedly received in hole 38 for drawing the band 24 tightly around the casing to hold the casing and hand against relative movement.
One of the principal advantages of the present invention is the fact that a relatively narrow strip of metal can be used for the band. The element that permits the use of narrow material is the stabilizing member 44 which is inserted between bolt 42 and the casing 12 and is adapted to contact the casing and engine at points substantially above and below the position of the band, thus giving substantial vertical support to the casing. Member 44 can readily be inserted in place between bolt 42 and casing 12 before said bolt is inserted in the holes 38 and 40, and after said bolt is inserted in the holes, the member is held firmly in place by the curved portion forming ribs or ridges 46 and 48 above and below the bolt. The portion of the stabilizing member in contact with the casing is curved to conform to the curvature of the casing to give greater surface contact between the member and casing and to prevent said member from slipping sidewise along bolt 42. When the filtering device is mounted on the engine and secured rigidly in place by screws 32, stabilizing member 44 is wedged firmly in place between the casing and the adjacent surface of the engine.
Although only one embodiment of my invention is shown and described herein, modifications may be made to suit requirements.
I claim:
A fixture for a filtering device having a cylindricalshaped casing, comprising a band adapted to substantially encompass said casing and having outwardly extending portions each with a flange for contacting the surface on which the device is to be mounted, a clamping member including a stem extending through said outwardly extending portions, a member arranged longitudinally of said casing disposed between said portions and between said stem and said casing and adapted to contact the casing and said surface only above and below said band, and ridge-like projections transversely arranged on said member on opposite sides of said stem for holding the member in fixed relation to the stem.
