FAUCET COVER Filed May 7, 1954 INVENTOR. Lawmeuc: i-Lwos 552mm,
United States Patent FAUCET COVER Lawerence H. Woebbeking, Cornell, Wis.
Application May 7, 1954, Serial No. 428,156
2 Claims. (Cl. 220-551 This invention relates to improvements in faucet covers, particularly for the type of faucets installed upon tank wagons.
An object of the invention is to provide a more efiicient and practical faucet cover for covering the free end of a faucet discharge pipe and prevent dust and dirt from accumulating in the pipe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a faucet cover which is of simple and inexpensive construction and which may be quickly and easily engaged upon and disengaged from the free end of a faucet discharge pipe.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description considered in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a faucet cover of the present invention in covering position upon the free end portion of a faucet discharge pipe.
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in more detail, the reference numeral designates generally the free end portion of a faucet discharge pipe, the pipe being provided with an external annular groove 11. The free end portion of the pipe may be formed integrally with the rest of the faucet or, as shown in the drawings, may be constituted by an adapter 12 in threaded engagement upon an externally threaded portion 14 of the pipe 10.
A protective cap, generally designated 15, embodying the present invention, is shown as detachably connected to the adapter 12. The cover 15 comprises a cap conformably shaped to receive the free end portion of the adapter 12 and a resilient latch 9 carried by the cap and seatable in the groove 11.
The cap is preferably cylindrical, like the adapter 12, and includes a side wall 16 which conforms to the adapter 12, and a closed end wall 17. The sidewall 16 has a pair of opposed openings 18 extending therethrough adjacent the end wall 17, the openings 18 registering with the-groove 11 when the cover 15 is placed in covering position upon the adapter 12.
The latch 19 consists of a strip 19' of resilient material 19 extending diametrically across the outer end of the sleeve 16 between the sleeve and the end wall 17 and in face to face contact with the inner surface of the end wall 17 and fixedly secured thereto. The end portions of strip 19 extend laterally outwardly from the side wall 16 and are return bent toward the side wall 16 to form opposed resilient arcuate fingers 20 which extend through the opposed openings 18 in the sleeve 16 and seat in the groove 11, resiliently holding the cover 15 upon the adapter 12. The fingers 20 terminate in terminals 20' hearing against the outer side of the side wall 16.
A housing 21, exteriorly of and carried by the cap, is provided to cover the fingers 20. The housings 21 are closed and are formed integrally with the side wall 16 and the end wall 17 and are so positioned and of such size and shape as to cover the fingers 20, the openings 18, and adjacent portions of the side Wall 16, with sufiicient clearance to permit the fingers 20 to be flexed entirely out of the openings 13 when the cover 15 is being engaged upon or disengaged from the adapter 12.
It Will be apparent from the foregoing description that the cover of the present invention may very easily be slipped upon the free end portion of a faucet discharge pipe between periods of use of the faucet and may be as easily withdrawn therefrom when the faucet is to be used. When placed in covering position, the cover positively prevents the entrance of dust and dirt into the free end of the discharge pipe and thus, particularly in the case of faucets upon oil tank vehicles, prevents the accumulation at the mouth of the faucet of a coating of dirt collected in the layer of liquid adhering to the surface of the pipe. The side wall 16 also prevents dust and dirt from accumulating on the outside of the end portion of the pipe and the housings 21 shield the fingers 20 and prevent foreign matter from entering the groove 11 through the openings 18. Moreover, the cover prevents the faucet from dripping and soiling the road or driveway at the point where the vehicle must stand for a considerable period of time.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cover for the free end of a faucet, a cylindrical cap having a sidewall and an endwall, said endwall having an inward side and an outer end, a resilient strip secured to and extending across said inward side of the endwall and across said inner end of the side wall, said strip terminating at its ends and outside of said sidewall in resilient fingers extending in a direction away from said endwall, said sidewall having openings registered with said fingers, said fingers having portions reaching through said openings for engagement with a faucet within said cap, and protective housings on said sidewall and projecting outwardly therefrom and severally enclosing the fingers and said openings.
2. A cover for the free end of a faucet pipe consisting of a substantially cylindrical cap having a side wall and a closed outer end wall having an inner side, said side wall having an outer end having portions spaced from the inner side of said end wall, a resilient strip extend ing across the inner side of the end wall and in the spaces between the outer end of the side wall and the inner side of the end wall, said strip having end portions reaching laterally outwardly beyond opposite sides of said side wall, said end portions being return bent toward the side Wall and toward the inner end of the side wall to provide arcuate fingers, opposite sides of said side wall having openings through which the arcuate fingers project, said side wall having an outer side, and said fingers having terminals bearing against the outer side of the side wall.
