3 Claims. (Cl. 46-157) My invention is an improved object for display; and especially a structure resembling a human figure of unique and attractive appearance, holding a panel for advertising matter dealing, for example, with an article of mechandise.

The chief aim of this invention is to provide such an object made of cardboard or other sheet material that can be easily bent into the required shape and then set up on view, with relatively large and rounded lower limbs and a prominent chubby body having a head and arms with the advertising panel at the top.

The nature of the invention is fully set forth in the ensuing description and the novel characteristics are broadly and specifically defined in the appended claims. 0n the drawings are illustrated some preferred embodiments of the device, but the actual construction can, of course, be varied in many particulars and still present the essential features which really constitute the invention.

Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear elevations respectively of one form of my improvement.

Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section.

Figure 4 is a horizontal section on line 4-4 in Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 in Figure 2.

Figure 6 shows a detail thereof.

Figure 7 shows the cardboard blank of which the device is made.

Figure 8 shows in plan the upper section for the head, arms and panel; and

Figure 9 is a front view of a different form.

The design shown in Figures 1 to 8 inclusive comprises a body 1 and legs 2. The body has the look of an individual of large girth and thick legs and the head 3 has a face like that of a Santa Claus or other well known real or mythical character. At the lower ends of the legs are flat projections or flaps 4 representing feet. The general effect is both pleasing and amusing. The back 5 of the body and the rear 6 of the legs are both flat.

The blank for making the object is composed of two

halves

11 and 12, each having a generally curved formation with the

parts

5 and 6 for the back each in the middle of one of the halves. The

parts

5 and 6 constituting the middle of the blank are integral with each other, but the two halves separate at both sides of the middle and present opposed curved diverging edges 7 and 8. The terminal edges 9 of the half 11 containing the part 5 are diagonal and inclined or converge towards each other. The side edges of the back portion 5 are delineated by the downward diverging score lines 10. The sections between the lines and the edges 9 are curved and bent towards each other when the device is set up to cause the body to bulge to the front.

The other half 12 also has diagonal edges 13 at its ends inclined or converging towards each other away from the section 12 and bearing locking tabs 14 at the corners remote from the curved edges 8. Notches 15 are cut into the tabs in line with the edges 13; and the outer edges of the tabs have shoulders 16 at the edges 13. The half 12 also has score lines 10 converging downward to mark the sides of the back part 6. The remaining edge of the half 12 is concave, and the tabs or flaps 4 project therefrom between the tabs 14 and the back portion 6. Between the lines 10 is a slit 17.

One of the edges 9 of the section 11 has a catch 18 extending parallel to this edge with the ends 19 cut 2,704,910 Patented Mar. 29, 1955 free. This catch enters a slit 20 out near the other edge 9 and the ends 19 hold at the ends of the cut 20. At the corner of this other edge, remote from the edge 7, is a projection 21.

To give the object its shape, the section 11 is bent about the creases 10 and the projecting portions at each side of the central portion 5 bounded by the score lines 10 and adjacent one end thereof are bent and secured together by inserting the catch 18 in the slit 20. The half 12 of the blank has its projecting portions at each side of the central portion bent in the same way, and the tabs 14 are inserted side by side into the slit 17. They are pressed downward to make the notches 15 receive the lower end of the slit and the shoulders 16 abut the upper end of this slit. The front of the figure then looks chubby and rounded. The flaps 4 are bent outward to horizontal position. The side edges of the middle portion marked by the lines 10 across each

11 and 12 converge away from each other, as plainly shown in Figure 7.

The remaining section or member with the outline of a head has an extension 22 representing an outstretched arm and another extension 23 representing the other arm carrying the panel 24. The head is glued to the flap 21. The head 3 has appropriate features painted, printed or stamped thereon, and the general effect draws attention to a marked extent. Any suitable advertisement may be exhibited on the panel 24.

In Figure 9, the arm 26 is bent and carries the representation of a spoon and the other arm is shown as if holding a cam 27 or the like container. The head 28 looks like the face of a cook with a cap thereon. Various other efiects can be obtained as may be desired.

While the figures represent a Santa Claus and a chef, other characters may, of course, be adopted. Sometimes also when other designs are produced, the score lines 10 marking off the

5 and 6 can be omitted. These portions, however, serve quite well when present, giving the body the form of a cone partially cut away on the side or rear thereof.

Uther variations are, of course, possible, for the panel 24 and other members can be omitted; and the shape and size of the legs and body, now illustrated as conical, can be altered; other means than tabs and slots employed to hold the ends of the sechon 12 to the back portion 6, and the upper section can be either glued or held in place by tabs and slots, or made integral with the rest of the figure when desired.

Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:

1. A figure of sheet material made of a blank comprising two sections each having a middle portion and a pro ecting portion at each side thereof, the middle portions being connected end to end, the projecting portions of one section being curled over and joined together to form a rounded part representing a human body, and the projecting portions of the other section being curled over and joined to the middle of the other section to form rounded parts representing legs, the edges of each middle portion being marked by lines converging away from the junction of the middle portions, said middle portions being fiat, whereby both the body and the legs taper and are thickest at the middle of the figure, and a flat piece of sheet material having the outline of the head and adjacent parts of said body attached to the top of the first section.

2. A figure made of a blank of sheet material having a middle part with a pair of projecting portions at one side, one such projection being adjacent each end of said part and a second pair of projecting portions, at the other side, one of said second pair being adjacent each opposite end of said part, two of said projecting portions being curled over towards each other arid united at their extremities to represent a body, and the other two curled over towards each other and secured to the middle part to represent legs, said part being fiat and having two pairs of side edges, between it and said projecting portions, each pair of said side edges converging away from the other pair, whereby both the body and the legs taper and are thickest at the middle of the figure, and a flat piece of sheet material representing a head and arms attached to said figure upon the first-named projecting portions. v

3. A figure made of sheet material formed of a blank comprising two sections joined together at their middle portions and having opposed curved divergent edges extending outward from the junction of the middle portions, the edges of each middle portion converging away from the other middle portion, one section being bentand having its ends fastened to each other, the ends of the other section being attached to the middle portion of said other section, the middle portions lying in a single plane and having said edges at the sides thereof in each 4 section, the sections forming the upper and lower parts of said figure, said parts tapering in opposite directions and being thickest at the middle of said figure.
