4 Claims. (CI. 20-62) This invention relates to a weather seal for jalousies.
An object of this invention is to provide in a jalousie an automatically operated weather seal which is moved to sealing position when the louvers are moved to closed position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a weather seal which can be easily applied to the present constructionof a jalousie in the form of an attachment for sealing the ends of the louvers.
A further object of this invention is to provide a Weatherstripping disposed along the sides of the jalousie frame which is spring-pressed to an outer inoperative position, and which includes means engaged by one or more louvers for swinging the Weatherstripping inwardly to operative position enclosing the ends of the louvers.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral designates generally a frame structure within which are mounted a plurality of louvers 11. The louvers 11 are mounted at the opposite ends thereof in holders 12 which include a rock lever 14 mounted on a pivot 13 carried by the frame 10. The louvers 11 are rocked to open or closed position as a unit by means of a vertically movable connecting bar 15 which is pivotally connected as at 16 to the inner ends of the levers 14.
The frame 10 includes a forwardly projecting flange 17 between which the ends of the louvers 11 engage, and in order to provide a means whereby the opposite ends of the louvers 11 and the holders 12 may be weather sealed, I have provided a weather sealing Z-shaped strip generally indicated at 18. There is a strip 18 along each vertical portion of the frame 10, and the strip 18 is formed of a stripdike body 19 which has an outwardly bent and acutely angled base flange 20.
The base flange 20 is adapted to confront an inwardly projecting flange or ledge 21 which is formed as part of the frame 10. The strip or body 19 at its outer edge is provided with an inwardly projecting flange 22 which is disposed on an acute angle relative to the body or strip 19. The flange 20 is adapted, when the Weatherstripping is in sealing position, to be moved inwardly into substantially covering position with respect to the holders 12. The flange 22 forms a channel within which a stepped rubber sealing strip 23 is disposed. There is a step 24 for each louver 11 and holder 12 and the step 24 is adapted to substantially contact with the confronting side of the holder 12. A spring 25 disposed about a bolt 26 which is threaded into flange 21 engages the outer side of flange o 20 and constantly urges the Weatherstripping or seal mem- 8 2,704,386 Patented Mar. 22, 1955 her 18 to an outer inoperative position, shown in dotted lines in Figure 3.
In order to provide a means whereby the weatherstripping or seal 18 is automatically moved to a sealing position encompassing the holders 12, I have provided a pin or operator 27 which is fixed to the strip or body 19 and projects inwardly through a slot 28 which is formed in the flange 17. The pin 27 confronts the inner side of a louver 11 adjacent the lower end of the louver so that when the louver 11 is swung downwardly and inwardly to a closed position, the louver 11 will engage operator or pin 27 and will thereby swing Weatherstripping 18 inwardly to a position covering or encompassing the holders 12. It will be understood that if desired, the stepped flange 23 may have the inner edge thereof provided with rubber sealing means engageable with the holders 12.
The Weatherstripping means hereinbefore described may be constructed in the form of an attachment for the present construction of jalousies, so that the ends of the louvers will be weather sealed, and the seal will be automatically operable by movement of the louvers to closed position. While only one operator 27 is herein disclosed, it will be understood that there may be one or more of these pins secured to the strip 19 for engagement with spaced louvers, so that the movement of the louvers to closed position will effect an even pressure on the Weatherstripping from end to end.
In Figure 5 there is shown a modified form of this invention embodying a channel shaped strip 30 having the channel thereof facing inwardly. The inner flange 31 of strip 30 confronts the flange 21 of the frame 10, and outer flange 32 has a narrow flange 33 forming a narrow channel within which a stepped yieldable sealing strip 34 engages. Channel 30 is constantly urged outwardly by means of a spring 35 engaging about a pin 36 which is fixed in frame flange 17 and projects outwardly and loosely through an opening 37 formed in the web 38 of channel 30. A stop 39 carried by pin 36 limits the outward movement of channel 30.
What is claimed is:
1. In a jalousie formed of a frame and a plurality of louvers rockably mounted in said frame, a Weatherstripping for the opposite ends of said louvers, said weatherstripping comprising an elongated Z-shaped member formed of an elongated flat strip, acutely angled oppositely extending flanges carried by the edges of said strip, one of said flanges constituting a base flange and having openings therethrough, headed securing means extending through said openings and engaging said frame, springs interposed between the heads of said securing means and the outer face of said base flange constantly urging said Weatherstripping to rock outwardly to inoperative position, the other of said flanges extending inwardly of said louvers, a stepped flange carried by said other flange and disposed substantially parallel with said flat strip, said frame having an outwardly opening slot therein, and a pin fixed to said flat strip extending through said slot in a position to be engaged by the inner side of a louver whereby movement of said louvers to closed position will contact said pin and thereby rock said Weatherstripping inwardly to covering position with respect to the ends of said louvers.
2. In a jalousie formed of a frame and a plurality of louvers rockably mounted in said frame, a weatherstripping for the opposite ends of said louvers, said Weatherstripping comprising an elongated Z-shaped member formed of an elongated flat strip, acutely angled oppositely extending flanges carried by the edges of said strip, one of said flanges constituting a base flange and having openings therethrough, headed securing means extending through said openings and engaging said frame, springs interposed between the heads of said securing means and the outer face of said base flange constantly urging said Weatherstripping to rock outwardly to inoperative position, the other of said flanges extending inwardly of said louvers, a stepped flange carried by said other flange and disposed substantially parallel with said fiat strip, and an inwardly projecting operator fixed to said strip in a position to engage the inner side of a louver when said louver is rocked to closed position whereby said Weatherstripping will be rocked inwardly to operative position encompassing the ends of said louvers.
3. In a jalousie formed of a frame with rockably mounted louvers in said frame, a Weatherstripping for the opposite ends of said louvers, said Weatherstripping being an elongated member, with the upper edge of said member having a Weatherstripping face, securing means for rockably mounting on a vertical axis said weatherstripping member to the frame of said jalousie frame, so as to cause the Weatherstripping face of said weatherstripping member to be constantly urged away from the weathersealing position to an outward inoperative position, and a member projecting from said Weatherstripping member and arranged so as to engage the louver when said louver is moved to a closed position, thereby rocking said Weatherstripping member inwardly so as to glover the ends of said louvers with respect to the window ame.
4. In a jalousie formed of a frame with rockably 2 mounted louvers in said frame, a Weatherstripping for the opposite ends of said louvers, said Weatherstripping being an elongated member, with the upper member having a Weatherstripping face, means for mounting said weatherstripping to the frame of said jalousie frame, with springs or the like in combination with the mounting means, whereby the Weatherstripping face of said Weatherstripping member is constantly urged to rock outwardly away from the louver ends to an inoperative and unweathersealing position, the said Weatherstripping member having a pin, fixed to the said Weatherstripping member, and arranged and mounted in such position as to be engaged by the innerside of a louver whereby movement of said louver to a closed position will contact said pin and, thereby, rock said Weatherstripping inwardly to a covering and Weatherstripping position with respect to the jalousie frame and the ends of said louvers.
