1 Claim. (Cl. 292338) This invention relates to a door control device.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door control device adapted to be attached to a door surface and which is adjustable to be positioned so that it can serve either as a bumper or will engage the floor or a plate disposed thereon so as to hold the door in a closed position, thereby serving as a night latch.
It is another object of the invention to provide a door control device wherein by applying pressure to one of the members the other member is extended outwardly to serve as a door stop and is retained in such position against the action of a spring by the engagement of the one member with a shoulder in, the casing containing the members and wherein by release of the one member, the other member will be returned to a position to engage the floor and hold the door in its closed position and against being opened.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door control device which has the above objects in mind, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, easy to install upon the door, compact, efiicient and effective in operation.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the door control device embodying the features of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. l, but with the bumper member extended to a position to engage the wall;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the figures, represents a floor on which is secured a threshold 11 lying in a door opening. Above the threshold is a door 12 which is hinged to the opening and which can be opened to a position against the stop plate 13 on a wall surface 14.
According to the present invention, there is attached to the side of the door 12 a door control device indicated generally at 15. The attachment is effected by means of screws 16 extending through flanges 17 and 18 on the opposite sides of the casing 15.
Pivoted in the casing and extending outwardly through an opening 18 is a stop lever 19. A pivot pin 20 extends through the sides of the casing and the stop member 19 can pivot up or down so as to be extended, as shown in Fig. 1, for engagement with a floor plate or, as shown in Fig. 2, with a wall plate 13, and serving as a stop.
An operating lever 21 has a bifurcated portion 22 and pivoted to this bifurcated portion by means of a pin 23 is the stop pivot lever 19. This operating member 21 extends outwardly and upwardly through an opening 24 in the top of the casing.
In the bottom of the casing 15 is a bent spring 25 that engages with the end of the lever 19 and which urges the same to a horizontal position, and toward the floor. Upon depressing the operating member 21 with the foot, the shoulder 26 may be engaged with a shoulder 27 on the casing. This pressure is effected against the action of spring 25 and accordingly upon the engagement of the shoulder 26 with the shoulder 27, the pivot lever 19 will be held in a horizontal position, such as shown in Fig. 2, so that as the door is opened, it will serve as a stop member and engage the wall plate 13.
To release the stop lever 19 so that it can be extended downwardly, the foot is applied to the operating member 21 so as to disengage the shoulder 26 from the shoulder 27. The spring 25 will accordingly urge the stop lever 19 to the elevated position, so that it will extend down, as shown in Fig. 1.
This stop lever 19 has a rubber head 28 thereon which may engage a plate 29 on the floor surface 10. The plate 29 is secured by screws 30 to the fioor and in a position so as to hold the door 12 within the door opening and prevent the same from being opened. In this position the lever 19 serves as a night latch for the door.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a door control device which serves as a door bumper and also as a night latch. It will be apparent that this device can be readily applied to the door and that the same can be easily operated by the foot.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A door control device comprising a casing having vertical walls, an attaching rear wall providing flanges on the casing through which screws may be extended to fix the casing to the wall of a door, a vertical slot in the front of the casing, an opening in the top of the casing, a lever having a stop head thereon extending through the vertical slot in the front of the casing, said lever being movable between a first horizontal position and a second downwardly inclined position, the lower edge of the vertical slot acting as a stop to determine the extent to which the lever is inclined in the second position, a pin adjacent the vertical slot and extending through the casing side walls and the inner end of the lever, said lever being pivotable between the first and second positions about said pin, a bent spring lying in the bottom of the casing and engaging with the underside of the stop lever, an operating member having a lower bifurcated end pivot-ally connected to the stop lever, said operating member extending upwardly through the opening in the top of the casing, a shoulder on the forward side of the said operating lever, said casing having an internal catch on the front wall thereof adapted to engage with the shoulder on the operating lever whereby to hold the stop lever in a horizontal position against the action of the spring in the bottom of the casing and releasable therefrom to permit the stop lever to be urged downwardly by the action of the spring and to a position to prevent movement of the door from its closed position upon the head engaging with the floor surface.
