ATTORNEY United States Patent Office 2,703,885 Patented Mar. 15, 1955 COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT Sam L. Davis, Lawrence, N. Y.
Application August 3, 1953, Serial No. 372,016
3 Claims. (Cl. 242) The present invention relates generally to feminine undergarments, and in particular it relates to breast and body supporting undergarments. Breast supporting undergarments, or brassieres, have long been known, and various types of body supporting garments have also long been known. The present invention relates specifically to a combined undergarment for supporting the breast and that portion of the body immediately below the breasts.
The main object of the present invention, therefore, is the provision of a new and improved combination feminine undergarment.
An associated main object of the present invention is the provision of a combination feminine undergarment for supporting the breasts and the body immediately therebelow, in the region of the diaphragm and waist.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a feminine undergarment for supporting the breasts, for placing the diaphragm under restraint and for constricting the waist, wherein the breast supporting portion and the diaphragm support and waist pincher are separable and individually usable.
Other, further, and more specific objects of the present invention will in part be obvious and in part specifically pointed out in the following embodiment thereof, taken in conjunction with drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of combined undergarment constructed according to and embodying the present invention, as applied to and about the upper portion of the female body; and
Figure 2 is a part perspective and part plan view thereof.
The undergarment according to the present invention is indicated generally by reference numeral 10, and it consists of an upper, breast-supporting member 12, and a lower, body encircling, diaphragm supporting and waist pinching member 14. The upper member 12 comprises a pair of laterally spaced apart, breast receiving pockets 16, 16, each having an end of one of a pair of shoulder straps 18, 18 secured to the upper edge thereof. A side panel 20 is secured to the outer edges of each of pockets 16, 16, and a back panel 22 is secured to the outer edges of each of side panels 20, 20. The free ends 24 of back panels 22, 22 are provided with cooperating hook-and-eye fasteners as 26, 26. The other ends of straps 18, 18 are secured to the upper edges of back panels 22, 22. Adjacent the lower edge 28 of the upper breast-supporting member 12, there is provided a plurality of spaced apart tabs 30, each having embedded therewithin the female component 32 of a snap fastener. The upper edges of tabs 30 are sewed or otherwise secured to the breast support 12, but the lower portions of the tabs are unsecured to the said member 12 and may swing freely.
The lower member 14 comprises a band 50 of horizontally stretchable material, at the ends of which are secured strips 52, 52 of a non-stretchable material of equal width. It is to be noted that strips 52, 52 are as long as the back panels 22, 22 forming part of upper member 12. The free ends 54, 54 of the lower band member 14 are provided with hook-and-eye fasteners 56, 56. The upper edge 58 of member 14 is provided, on its inner face, with a plurality of spaced-apart tabs 60 each of which has mounted therein a male snap fastener component 62. Tabs 60, 60 are spaced apart the same distance as tabs 30, 30, and there are as many tabs 60 on band 14 as there are tabs 30 on member 12.
The upper member 12, from end to end thereof, is as long as lower member 14 in normal, contracted condition, and the ends 24, 54 thereof are flush. Thus, ,when the cooperating snap fasteners 32, 62 are interengaged, the combined undergarment can be handled as a unit and fastened at the rear of the body by the vertically aligned hook-and-eye fasteners 26, 56 on the upper and lower members. As will be obvious, the breast support 12 and the ldiaphragm support 14 may be used and worn separate y.
When fitted together, the upper edge of band 14 overlaps the lower edge of member 12. The face-aligned tabs space the members apart, at least to some slight extent, thus permitting breathing on movement of the wearer. The securement between the garment portions will prevent relative riding of the portions and the discomfort attending same.
While sizes and relative dimensions vary, the lower band is of such width as to extend normally from the waist up to the lower edge of the breast support 12.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A feminine undergarment comprising a shoulder strap-supported breast encircling member, means thereon to fasten the ends thereof at the back of the wearers body, a waist and diaphragm encircling band and means thereon aligned with the first referred to means to fasten the ends thereof at the back of the wearers body, the band being longitudinally stretchable, a plurality of spaced-apart tabs secured at the outer face of the breast encircling member adjacent the lower edge thereof and at the front sides and back thereof, a similar plurality of equidistantly spaced apart tabs secured to the band adjacent the upper edge and on the inner face thereof, and cooperating snap fasteners embedded in the tabs whereby to releasably secure the band to the breast encircling member.
2. A feminine undergarment as in claim 1, wherein the upper ends only of the tabs are secured to the breast encircling member, and the lower portions thereof are free to swing outwardly therefrom, thereby permitting relative movement of the breast and waist encircling members.
3. A feminine undergarment as in claim 2, wherein the tabs are face-abutted on interfit of the cooperating snap fasteners thereon, the abutted tabs spacing apart the overlapped lower edge of the breast encircling member and the upper edge of the band.
