(Cl. 248-255) My invention relates to supports and more particw larly to bracket devices for supporting curtains, shades and the like, examples of prior art devices being disclosed in United States Letters Patent Nos. 1,280,053; 1,299,993; 1,384,273; 1,596,506; 1,796,684; 1,814,066; 2,382,887; 2,386,861 and 2,396,572.

In present day building construction, window frames are often disposed in such close proximity to partitions or walls that it is not feasible or practical to attach a bracket device to each outer side face of the frame. My invention overcomes the foregoing disadvantages, it being one of the objects of my invention to provide devices capable of being readily secured to the inner side faces of the frame and which devices are equipped with means for supporting a curtain rod in spaced relation with respect to the front face of the frame.

Another object of my invention is to provide a bracket device for attachment to the inner face of a window frame and which is simple in construction, durable in use and economical in manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

In practicing my invention, as illustrated in Figures l to inclusive of the drawings, I provide a pair of supporting brackets 5 which are connected to the upper corners, respectively, of a window frame or casing. Each of the brackets 5 are constructed of relatively thin metal and fashioned with a front or plate section 6, the latter being formed at one side with a right-angularly disposed end portion 7 disposed in abutting relation with the inner face of the respective stile S of the casing and subjacent the top frame member T. The end portion 7 of the section 6 has its lower edge provided with a depending 2,703,693 Patented Mar. 8, 1955 nger 8 formed with a suitable opening or aperture 9 for accommodating the trunnion of a shade roller R, it being understood that the openings 9 of the pair of brackets 5 are of different shapes to accommodate different shaped trunnions of the roller R in the usual manner to effect proper operation of the roller R during raising and lowering of the shade attached thereto.

The portion 7 of each bracket is formed with a centrally disposed aperture 10 in which is received one of the diametrically reduced ends 11 of a fastening device 12, the latter comprising a pair of threadedly connected members which, when their ends 11 are disposed in the apertures 10 of the pair of brackets and relatively r0- tated, to move the ends 11 away from each other, serve to clamp the portions 7 against the inner side faces of the stiles S. To preclude relative rotation of the brackets 5 with the casing when the brackets are being attached, the portions 7 are formed with triangular-shaped teeth 13 which are forced into the stiles S, thus securing the brackets 5 to the casing against rotation. As depicted in Figure 5, in instances where it is not practicalor desirable to secure the brackets 5 with the device 12, the portions 7 of each bracket is provided with a plurality of holes 14 through which nails 15 or the like may be driven to secure the brackets 5 to the stiles S.

Distally located with respect to the portion 7, the section 6 of each bracket 5 is formed with an upwardly extending portion 16 which, together with the section 6, is disposed in abutting relation over the front face of the respective side member C of the casing. The portion 16, superjacent the section 6, is formed at its sides with forwardly extending flanges 17 provided at their upper outer corners with toes 18 which serve to latch to the flanges 17 coincident ends of a pair of relatively at tubular telescopic rods F of ordinary construction for supporting draperies and the like, the opposite ends of the rods being similarly connected to the other bracket of the pair.

In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures l, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the upper end of the portion 16 of each bracket is formed with an arm 19 extending out. wardly from the respective member C and terminating in close proximity to a wall W extending at an angle to the wall to which the member C is connected. The outer end of the arm 19 is formed with a sleeve 20 for receiving and supporting the end of a rod D similarly connected to the other bracket of the pair. When the brackets are connected to the window casing, as herein disclosed, they cooperate with each other to constitute au etcient support for curtain and drapery rods as well as the shade roller, particularly in instances where space is limited by reason of an adjacent wall or the like.

In the modied form of the bracket disclosed in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive of the drawings, the bracket is formed with a body or plate section 25 which is secured to the underface of the top frame member T adjacent the inner face of the stile, it being understood that a similar bracket is attached to the opposite end of the member T in proximity to the other stile and with the brackets constituting right and left hand brackets, the latter being depicted in the drawings. One side of the body section 25 is formed with a depending finger 26 provided with an opening 27 for accommodating the trunnion of the shade roller while an end of said section is formed with a rightangularly extending portion 28 overlying the front face of the member T. The nger 26 is disposed in abutting relation with the adjacent face of the stile while the section 25 is secured to the member T by means of nails 29 or the like driven into the member T through openings 30 formed in the section 25. One side of the portions 28 has extending forwardly therefrom a ange 31 formed at its upper outer corner with a tool 32 which serves to latch to the flange the end of a telescopic rod for supporting a curtain or drape, it being understood that the right-hand bracket is similarly constructed with a flange 31 for supporting the other end of the rod.

As illustrated in Figure 9 of the drawing, there is provided a bracket 40 having a body or plate section 41 for attachment to the underface of the top member of the casing in a somewhat similar manner as disclosed in connection with the form shown in Figures 6 to 8 of' the drawings. One end of the section 41 is formed with a right-angularly and upwardly extending portion 42 provided on its sides with a pair of flanges 43 each formed with a toe 44 for latching to the respective ange in the aforementioned type of rod. This type of bracket permits a pair of rods to be used and in instances where it is not desirable to provide a shade.

In many kitchens and the like, relatively short curtains are provided which necessitates the support of a curtain rod midway between the upper and lower ends of the window casing. In order to support a rod in this position, l provide a pair of brackets with the left hand bracket being illustrated in Figure 10. This bracket is formed with a body portion 50 provided at one side with an end portion 51 secured to the inner face of the stile of the casing by means of nails 52 or the like extending through holes formed in the portion 51. The section 50 overlies the front face of the respective side member of the casing and is formed, at the opposite side, with an upwardly extending portion 52' fashioned at one side, adjacent its top, with an outwardly extending flange 53 provided with a toe 54 for latching to said ange the end of the curtain rod, the opposite end of the curtain rod being attached to the right-hand bracket of similar construction.

In the use of Venetian blinds, the end portions 7 of the brackets are each formed, at their upper ends, with a U-shaped supporting member 60 which has detachably mounted therein a flange 61 fashioned from the top wall 62 of the blind holder 63, the latter being also provided with bottom and

side walls

64 and 65, respectively. The holder receives the sham front 66 of the blind assembly and which is interposed between the top and

bottom walls

62 and 64, respectively. The top rail 67 of the blind is supported on the bottom wall 64 and between the side walls 65 as clearly illustrated in Figures 11 and 12 of the drawings.

Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.

It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefore as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. ln a bracket of the class described, a plate-like section for overlying an outer face of a window casing and formed at one side with an angularly related end portion adapted to extend over one of a pair of the confronting inner lateral faces of said casing, the upper end of said section being fashioned, at the opposite side, with an upwardly extending front portion formed adjacent its upper end and on the side remote from said end portion with a laterally disposed arm extending at an angle with respect to said section, said arm having an outer end formed with a sleeve for receiving an end of a curtain rod and with said sleeve adapted to be disposed in close proximity to a wall or the like extending at an angle with respect to said section, said end portion being formed with a plurality of detents for penetrating said inner face to prevent shifting of said bracket relative to said casing.

2. In a bracket of the class described, a plate-like sec tion for overlying an outer face of a window casing and formed at one side with an angularly related end portion adapted to extend over one of a pair of the confronting inner lateral faces of said casing, the upper end of said section being fashioned, at the opposite side, with an upwardly extending front portion formed adjacent its upper end and on the side remote from said end portion with a laterally disposed arm extending at an angle with respect to said section, said arm having an outer end formed with a sleeve for receiving an end of a curtain rod and with said sleeve adapted to be disposed in close proximity to a wall or the like extending at an angle with respect to said section, said front portion being formed, subjacent its upper end, with rod supporting and attaching means, said end portion being formed with a plurality of detents for penetrating said inner face to prevent shifting of said bracket relative to said casing.

3. A bracket assembly comprising a pair of brackets each provided with a plate-like section for appressed overlying relation with the outer face of a window casing having a pair of substantially right-angularly related confronting inner faces, each section of said brackets being formed at one side with a substantially right-angularly extending plate-like end portion adapted to extend over one of said inner faces in appressed relation therewith, said portion of each section being provided with a support member and attaching means extending from said portion for attaching said portion to the adjacent inner face, holders detachably connected to and supported by said support members of said portions of said brackets, respectively, and support means disposed between said end portions and having ends extending into said holders, respectively, whereby, said support means is secured to and between said brackets and cooperates with said attaching means to prevent shifting of said brackets relative to said inner faces.

4. A bracket assembly comprising a pair of brackets each provided with a plate-like section for appressed overlying relation with the outer face of a window casing having a pair of substantially right-angularly related confronting inner faces, each section of said brackets being formed at one side with a substantially right-angularly extending plate-like end portion adapted to extend over one of said inner faces in appressed relation therewith, said portion of each section being fashioned, along its upper edge, with a U-shaped support member, the end portions of the sections of said brackets being provided with attaching means for penetrating said inner faces, holders arranged adjacent said end portions and provided with flanges disposed within said support members of said portions, respectively, support means disposed between said portions and having ends extending into said holders, respectively, whereby, said support means is secured to and between said brackets and cooperates with said attaching means to prevent shifting of said brackets relative to said inner faces.
