6 Claims. (Cl. 112-151) My invention relates to improvements in presser foot and edge gauge attachments for sewing machines.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a presser foot and edge gauge attachment for the presser foot bar of sewing machines which is especially constructed and arranged for edging and raising thick material such as used in manufacture of coats and suits, and which is provided with edge guiding means adjustable laterally and vertically according to requirements and constantly urged toward engagement with the bed of the sewing machine for guiding the edge of the work during reciprocation of the attachment by the presser foot bar.
Other and subordinate objects, together with the precise nature of my improvements and the advantages there of will become readily apparent when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Figure l is an exploded view in perspective of the parts of the presser foot and edge gauge of my invention in the preferred embodiment thereof;

Figure 4 is a view in side elevation viewed from the outer side of the presser foot, and
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation viewed from the other side of the presser foot.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates the presser foot of my invention which is formed of flat metal, bifurcated at 3 in the usual manner to accommodate the needle 5 and extending forwardly from a flat metal presser foot shank 7 having the usual socket 9 and rear shoulder 11 at its upper end for engaging the lower end of the presser foot bar 13 of a sewing machine, said socket having the usual open end slot 15 in the outer left hand side thereof for the usual presser foot attaching screw 17. Adjacent its lower end, the shank 7 is formed in its rear face with a rear boss 19 projecting laterally from the outer side of the shank 7 and provided with a horizontal, rectangular guide tongue 21 facing forwardly. A threaded bore 23 extends through the shank 7 and boss 19 in horizontal alignment with the tongue 21. The function of the guide tongue 21 and bore 23 will presently more clearly appear.
An elongated, flat metal, presser plate 25 of angle bar form to provide an upright rear attaching flange 27 and a horizontal forwardly extending base flange 29 is carried by the shank 7 to extend horizontally, endwise across the same with an inner right hand end a substantial distance to the right of the inner right hand side of the shank 7 and presser foot 1 with its base flange 29 imposed on said presser foot 1. The rear flange 21 is provided with an open end horizontal slot 31 slidably fitting over the guide tongue 21 so that said plate is adjustable horizontally endwise to variably extend the inner end of the same from the inner side of the presser foot 1 and shank 7. A screw 33 is provided for extending through slot 31 and turning into the bore 23 to retain said plate 25 in adjusted position.
The rear flange 27 is cut away as at 35, at the inner end of the plate 25 to reduce weight and is provided with an upstanding apertured tongue 37 at said inner end, and the base flange 29 is provided with a forwardly extending transverse guide slot 39 offset laterally from the inner end of the plate 25, all for a purpose presently seen. At the outer end of the plate 25, the base flange 29 18 provided 2,703,542 Patented Mar. 8, 1955 with a square notch 41 over the presser foot 1 to expose the needle 5 and stitching so as to render stitching readily visible. The guide slot 39 is closely adjacent the inner end of the plate 25.
An edge gauge bar 43 of flat spring metal is carried by the plate 25 at the inner end of said plate. The gauge bar 43 is provided with an upper attaching end portion 45 fitting fiat against the tongue 37 in front thereof and provided with a vertical slot 47 through which a screw 49 extends into the aperture 51 of the tongue 37 so ,that said bar 43 is vertically adjustable on the plate 25. The gauge bar 43 curves downwardly and forwardly and terminates at its lower end in a forwardly extending, vertical edge guide blade 53 for the work parallel with the presser foot 1, or line of stitching, not shown, and fitting in the slot 39 with a rounded front end toe 53 and a substantially straight bottom edge 57 urged, by resiliency of said bar, toward engagement with the bed 59 of the sewing machine during vertical movement of the plate 25 and presser foot 1 by the presser foot bar 13, so that said guide blade 53 tends to constantly maintain engagement with the edge of the work 61. The round toe 55 obviates snagging of the work 61 on the blade 53 during feeding of the work. As will be seen, the gauge bar 43- is designed to flex so as to permit the guide blade 53 to work vertically in the slot 39 during vertical movement of the plate 25 with the presser foot bar 13. To facilitate such flexing and to arrange said blade 53 vertically, the gauge bar 43 is twisted intermediate the attaching portion 45 and said blade 53 and curved forwardly and downwardly and also laterally.
The operation of the described invention will be read ily understood. The presser plate 25 is adjusted endwise on the presser foot shank 7 by the means described to space the edge guide blade 55 from the presser foot 1, and line of stitching, so as to gauge the distance between the line of stitching and the guided edge of the work 61. As the presser foot 1 and shank 7 move vertically, the gauge 43 moves correspondingly and flexes and reacts so as to always engage the guide blade 53 with the bed plate 59 with light pressure and maintain it engaged with the edge of the work. The gauge bar 43 may be adjusted vertically on the tongue 37 so that the blade 53 will lightly engage the bed 59 in stitching material in different thicknesses.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications its tflall within the scope of the invention as herein set What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. An attachment for the presser foot bar of a sewing machine comprising a presser foot having an upright shank attachable to said bar and having an inner side, an elongated plate extending endwise horizontally across said presser foot with an inner end spaced from the inner side of the presser foot, said plate having a vertical rear flange opposed to said shank and a horizontal forwardly extending base flange overlying the presser foot and provided with a transverse guide slot therein adjacent said end, a gauge bar depending from said rear flange and attached thereto and having a terminal edge guide blade depending through said guide slot for engagement with an edge of work being sewed, and devices on said shank and rear flange coacting to fasten said plate to said shank for adjustment endwise to variably space said blade from said presser foot to correspondingly space a line of stitching from said edge of the work.
2. An attachment according to claim 1, said gauge bar having an upper end attaching portion, and means attaching said upper end portion to said rear flange for vertical adjustment of said gauge bar relative to said plate.
3. An attachment according to claim 1, said gauge bar being resilient for downward flexing to engage said blade with the bed of the sewing machine.
4. An attachment according to claim 3, said bar curving downwardly and forwardly and laterally to facilitate flexing thereof.
5. An attachment according to claim 1, said devices comprising a horizontal lateral tongue on said shank, a horizontal slot in said rear flange fitting over said tongue.
6. An attachment according to claim 1, said base plate having a corner notch over the presser foot exposing the stitching to view.
