Application July 30, 1940, Serial No. 348,329
11 Claims.
The improvements relate to the presser foot of av sewing machine and attachments connected and operating therewith and are partly in the nature of improvements in the subject matter of my Patent No. 2,202,059, granted May 28, 1940.
The object of the present improvements are in part to provide a presser foot construction constructed and arranged to hold securely various devices to be used in cooperation therewith or as parts thereof; to so design these attachments and the presser foot that various operations may be performed or facilitated and better work on material of various character and thickness produced. Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description.
The improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, referred to herein, and in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an exemplary embodiment;
Fig. 2 a front View thereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical media1 section substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 a side elevation and Fig. 5 a plan of a two part presser foot assembled;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation and Fig. 7 an enlarged detail of a detachable foot member secured to the post of the foot in difierent manner from that of Figs. 1 to 5, Fig. 6 showing the lower portion of the post and the method of attaching the member;
Fig. 8 is a front view of an adjustable guide member or runner adapted to be used in combination with cloth guiding and holding members of different widths, said guide mounted on the post;
Fig. 9 is a plan of one of the detachable holders and guides with presser footmember secured thereto and Fig. 10 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 11 is a plan of the detachable runner of Fig. 8 with its mounting and adjusting members; and
Fig. 12 is a side view thereof;
Fig. 13 is a side View of a tape or ribbon guide and tension device on the presser foot, and Figs. 14 and 15 are plan and front views respectively of this device;
Fig. 16 is a plan and Fig. 17 a side View of a double cloth holding and guiding device adapted to extend laterally on either or both sides of the presser foot.
It will be understood that the guides and runners may be made left handed instead of right handed, as shown, so that if desired they will operate on the cloth at the left side of the presser foot instead of the right. This is desirable in cases where the nap of the cloth or the peculiar character and weight of the cloth makes it advisable.
In the drawings, i represents a presser foot shank adapted to be mounted on the lower portion of an ordinary presser bar and 2 the presser foot member integral therewith. This unit is shaped, bored and threaded to carry the detachable members hereinafter described, by having a cross recess 3 at the horizontal base of the foot, a hole 3 extending crosswise through the upright portion of the shank member with a flat side next to the internally threaded bore 5 running thereinto, an inclined internally threaded bore 6 running through the heel of member i from back to front and a threaded recess 5 above the bore 5.
The cross recess 3 is angular and is adapted to receive and hold the shanks 28 of the detachable members, which are held therein by the bottom. horizontally turned portion iii of the slide 9 secured to the shank member by the set screw i i passing through the slot 52 and into the recess i. A. slot l3 through which the set screw i l extends into the bore 5 and to the hole 4 together with the slot !2 permits the member 9 to slide up and down when the screw it is loosened, and the slots hold this member against lateral movement by engaging the screws. The slide 9, also holds the vertical plate i5 between it and the front face of the shank member 6, and this plate extends slightly below the horizontally turned bottom of the slide and into contact with the shank of the removable member, where it is provided with a beveled bottom it. The thumb screw l1 extending through the inclined bore 6 when tightened presses against the lower end of the plate l5 and causes the inclined terminus of the plate to move and wedge against the shank 28 of the detachable member, thereby securely binding the said shank in the recess 3. In this manner the detachable parts are securely held in position by a turn of the set screw H and released by a turn in the opposite direction.
The set screw it not only serves to align the slide 9 but extending through the bore 5 to the fiat sided hole 6 engages members such as the flat sided shank i9 of the detachable presser foot claw I8 and the similarly shaped bar 2! of the runner guide 2i! adjustably mounted on said bar by means of the bored block 22 and adapted to be secured in various positions thereon by means of the set screw 23. It is also adjustably .mounted on the block 22 by having its upwardly.
extending shank 24 running through a fiat sided aperture 25 in the block, so that the set screw 26 will hold it in various positions to which it may be adjusted vertically. The bar 2| and shank 24 are fiat sided to fit the holes 4 and 25 respectively, and be held thereby against turning.
The foot member 21 is secured to the other member of the presser foot by means of its shank 28 extending through and secured in the recess 3, so that the two when thus joined together form an ordinary presser foot with two claws or fingers and a needle slot 29 between them. The width of this slot, however, may be adjusted by moving the detachable foot member to the right or the left and securing it by means of the binding screw H. The same is true when the foot member I8 is employed, and this may be done at all times when the hole 4 is not occupied by the bar 2| or some other mounting member. Thus, when the plate attachment 33' is used, and. its shank 3| occupies the recess 3, the presser foot may be completed by means of the member l8 mounted in the hole 4, but when the bar 2| is in the hole 4 this cannot be done. Therefore, to provide for cases in which both the recess 3 and hole 4 are occupied, the detachable foot member 32 is mounted on the plate 39 by having the rear edge of the plate passed into its horizontal slot 33 and the two secured by the set screw 34. The advantage of the double presser foot is well known, but to employ a double presser foot in connection with extending guide plates such as -which may be of any desired widthand a guide runner either integral with said plate or in the form shown at 23, has the double advantage of securely holding and moving the material operated upon step by step and guiding the said material accurately as it passes beneath the needle to form an exactly uniform selvage or border of the folded material or of extra material. The lateral adjustment of the runner 2|] enables the operator to use it with plates of various widths, according to the width of the selvage or folded seam to be stitched, and the vertical adjustment gives the operator the advantage of being able to raise or lower the guide plate to accommodate various thicknesses of material, regulate the pressure thereon beyond the stitching and bring its bottom edge parallel with the bottom of the presser foot when it is working close in. These advantages are important, particularly when folded selvages are being formed on heavy goods.
The ribbon or tape guide presser foot attachment 35 is useful where seams are to be taped, and in other operations where tapes or ribbons are applied. It is attached to the presser foot, like the other members, by means of its shank 36, has a spring ribbon slot 31, the tension of which can be regulated by means of the adjusting screw 38 passing through the free ends 39 and threaded into one of them, or ribbons of different weights accommodated. The ribbon is usually fed through the slot 31 from a spool and under the needle. This attachment has various uses, and may, if desired, be detachably mounted on plates such as 30.
The double attachment (Figs. 16 and 17) has its fiat bar 40 passed through the recess 3 and is clamped by the screw I! at any point intermediate its ends. It acts in manner similar to the plates 30 on either side of the presser foot, the plate 4| being inclined upwardly. It also has a runner 42 vertically adjustable in an upstanding bracket 43 by means of the thumb nut 44 threaded on the horizontally extending post 45 and clamping the upwardly extending shank 46 between it and the bracket, which is substantially U-shaped in horizontal cross section and holds the runner 42 against oscillation in a vertical plane. The bracket 43' of the opposite end of the fiat bar 4| and the threaded post 45 serve the same purpose as the corresponding parts. Between 40 and 4| is a space 43 forming an opening across this member coincident with the needle slot 29, so that the said slot is left clear and unobstructed for the reciprocation of the needle therein.
