BRAKE-LEVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent-No. 270,174, dated January 2, 1883,
- Application filed August 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that 1, JOHN L. BARKER, ot
. Racine, in the county. of Racine, and in the .ing and riveting the parts together, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects Iattaiu by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved locking device; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional'view of a portion thereof on the line 00 as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section taken at right angles to the line :0 m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 represents a detached perspectiveview of the link which connects the two levers.
The letter A indicates a board or plate carryin g the working parts of my improved brakelock; curved brace secured to the face of the board or plate, and U a segment secured to the said board and connecting with the brace before mentioned at D. The brace at its lower end is provided with a socket, E,
in which is pivoted thelower end of a lever, F, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Upon the lever is mounted a sliding metallic frame, G, which also sets over-and is adapted to move upon the segment 0, the said segment being ratcheted or serrated at its lower edge, and the frame at one side being provided with a lip, H, adapted to engage the ratchets and hold the lever in any desired position, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. l. The said frame is provided with a recess, I, in which is adapted to slide a follower, K, which is held normally against the upper edge of the segment 0 by means of a spring, L, as shown .in Fig. 2. The said follower bears at one side against the lever F, and is of such size and shape as to be confined in the recess by means of said lever when the parts of the device are secured together, but which may be turned and removed when the frame is removed from .the lever.
The frame at one side is provided with a recessed projection, M, having an inwardlyturned lip, N, which-isadapted to engage a recess, 0, near the end of the auxiliary lever P and hold it loosely in place, the, lower end of said lever bearing against the edge of the lever F, which bearingserves as a fulcrum for ,the'lever P. The lever P extends upward and terminates at the end of the lever F, the two being provided with handles R, by which they in ay be grasped. The two levers are con nected near their upper ends by means of a link, S, which has cast with it the pivots T, adapted to enter suitable apertures in the handles. The said link is provided with shoul ders U, which bear against the sides of'the 1e.-
vers when the link is in place.
It will be seen that as thus constructed the follower and auxiliary lever will be held in place by the lever F, thus obviating the use of rivets or pivots and the necessity of drilling, thereby reducing the expense and pro ducing a stronger device. The link, being cast in one piece, does not require to have the rivets subsequently attached, producing a stronger isi 1. In combination with the lever F and segment 0, the frame Gr, adapted to slide on said lever and segment, and engage and disengage andless expensivelinkthan heretofore. When the ratchet, the said frame being provided with a recessed projection, M, and in wardly-turned lip N, and the lever P, provided with a recess, 0, into which the lip N projects, whereby the ICC said lever P is held without rivets, snbstanpivots T, all cast in one piece, substantially as [0 tially as specified. and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with lever F, segment 0, In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in frame G, and lever P, the follower and spring presenceoftwo witnesses,this27tl1dayofJune, located in a recess in the frame, whereby the 1882.
parts are held in normal position, substantially JOHN L. BARKER. as specified. VVitnesses:. 3. in combination with the levers F and P, O. J. RICHARDS,
the link S, provided with shoulders U and F. E. WEEKS.
