1 Claim. (Cl. 103-87) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in submersible sump pumps.
An object of the invention is to provide a pump of this character, the parts of which are related together in a manner such as permits inexpensive and economical assembly.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a sump pump which s compact and one which may be manufactured at an economical cost.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a submersible sump pump of the character hereinafter described providing a housing having an open top and a closed bottom with a cap for the open top and an integral base extending from the closed bottom, together with a horizontal partition in the base above the bottom edge thereof to provide together with the closed bottom an impeller chamber in which a motor-driven impeller is arranged, said closed bottom and cap providing bearings into which the opposite ends of the shaft are journalled.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional detail view of the invention taken substantially on line 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The several objects of my invention are accomplished by the preferred form of construction shown in the accompanying drawings and in which a housing is indicated at 10. This housing has an open top 11 and a closed bottom 12.
A suitable seal ring 13 of the pressure type is mounted in a groove 14 formed in the housing 10 to provide an effective Water-tight seal between the housing and a cap 15 which closes the open top of the housing.
The housing provides an integral base 16 formed preferably as an integral part of the housing. At one side of the housing is an integral extension 17 which provides an outlet 18 to which an exhaust or outlet pipe (not shown) is adapted to have threaded connection.
Arranged in the base 16 substantially midway between the closed bottom 12 and the bottom edge 19 of the base 16 is a partition 20 secured to an integral plate 21 of the base 16 as by means of screws 22. This partition 20 provides together with the closed bottom 12 an impeller chamber 23. In this impeller chamber 23 is an impeller 24 having an axially extending portion 25 pro viding an intake 26. The partition 20 provides an annular depending ring 27 which provides a seal for the extension 25 of the impeller 24.
The impeller 24 is carried by one end 28 of a shaft 29. This shaft 29 comprises a part of a motor unit 30 arranged within the housing and seated upon an annular seat or shoulder 31 provided by the housing. The opposite end portion of the shaft 29 1s Journalled m a bearing 31' mounted in a depending boss or bearing 32 formed as an integral part of the cap 15. Arranged in the circuit of the motor 30 is a centrifugal control switch 33 of any approved construction.
A water-tight seal 34 is provided between the integral bearing 35 of the closed bottom 12 and the shaft 29. This seal may be of any approved construction as will best serve the purpose and which will guard against the admission of water or moisture into the housing 10.
The cap 15 provides a lateral support 36 for a pair of electrode supporting plugs 37 within which are arranged electrodes 38 having connection through a conductor bushing 39 to the conductor wires 40 of the motor circuit (not shown). These electrodes are of different lengths and provide a water level control. While I have shown the electrodes supported from the cap, it is clear tllat they may be carried by the side wall of the housing From the foregoing description, that the motor and its associated parts can be readily and conveniently assembled within the housing 10. It will also be obvious that a minimum degree of labor is required in assembling the impeller within the impeller chamber. Such an arrangement permits the manufacture of my improved submersible sump pump at the most economical cost. The construction provides a sump pump having a motor-enclosing housing which is substantially waterproof, the arrangement preventing admission of water or moisture into the motor housing 10.
Another feature which permits expeditious assembly and economical manufacture of my improved sump pump is the fact that it comprises relatively t'ew parts, the parts thereof being so related as to permit ready and economical assembly.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, there fore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
`A submersible sump pump comprising a housing including a circular side wall, a bottom wall, and an open top, a cap for the open top and having an electrode support integral therewith and extending from one side thereof exteriorly of the housing, a seal between the cap and the housing, a hollow base support for the housing, said base being integral with said side wall and extending outwardly and downwardly from the lower edge thereof, a removable horizontal partition in said base above the bottom edge thereof and in spaced relation with respect to the bottom wall and providing together with the side wall and bottom wall and impeller chamber of a greater width than said housing and having a vertical extending outlet at one side and exterior of said housing, said partition having a depending substantially centrally 1ocated ring portion providing an opening, an impeller in said chamber having a portion providing an inlet projecting through the opening provided by said ring portion, and a motor in said housing having a shaft extending through the bottom wall into said chamber and carrying the impeller.
