Description
l the city of Montreal, in the district of Monfrost proof, impervious to water, and not liable art.
UNITED STATES A CHARLES TAYLOR, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
MONTREAL, QUEBEC, OANADA,-ASSIGNOR or Two- THIRDS TO JOSEPH JAMES AND ENOCH JAMES, BOTH OE SAME PLACE.
PLASTIC COMPOUND FOR ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 270,151, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed. November 8, 1882. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES TAYLOR, of
treal and Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, haye invented a certain new and useful Plastic Compound for Roofing; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame.
The bject of the presentinve'ntion is to produce a plastic compound for roofing and other like purposes which will be cheap, durable, and easily applied, and at the same time fire and to crack; Many other advantages will be derived from the use of my invention, which will be readily understood by those skilled in the The compound is formed as follows: I first take one part of that variety of the hornblende family of minerals which is called actinolite, and having ground same to a fine condition, or until the same is reduced as finely as possible without destroying the fiber by any suitable machine, I mix therewith an equal quantity of coal-tar or its chemical. equivalent, or sutficient to make the mixture plastic enough to be applied with a trowel.
The compound thus formed is adapted for roofing or other purposes where its qualities will be desirable, and is applied in any suitable manner.
The compound may be applied over one or more s'heetings of roofing-felt, or direct to the boardin g, if desired, the fibrous actiuolite serving to bind the coal-tar firmly and hermetically seal the lighter oils contained therein, which, without the admixture of fiber,'would evaporate, and thus have the eft'ei-t of hardening the coal-tar to such an extentthat the root'- ing would crack-and become otherwise unserviceable, while by my invention the roofing retains its softness and pliability for years.
In some cases, where a cheap roofing is desired, I may lessen the quantity of actiuolite, leaving only sutficient-to bind the compound together and keep it flexible, and substitute for the proportion removed an equal or greater quantity of carbonate of lime or red pyrite or oxide of-iron, or both, which materials are known to be cheamdurable, and fireproof. In all cases a light coating of sand is applied to the compound after it has been laid, and the wholeproperly leveled.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plastic compound for roofing and other like purposes composed ot'actinolite ground to a consistency in which the fiber is not destroyed and coal-tar or its chemical equiva-' lent, substantially in the proportions specified.
CHARLES TAYLOR. Witnesses: R. A. KELLOND,
