1 Claim. (Cl. 30-73) This invention relates to shaving implements and more particularly to an adjustable safety razor of the type in which the handle is arranged at right angles to the plane of a double-edged blade, which latter is clamped between a guard and a clamping plate, the guard being composed of two sections with means for adjusting the two sections in relation to each other and to the cutting edges of the blade to control the degree of exposure of the said cutting edges. The usual interiorly threaded detachable handle serves as the means for locking the guard sections in an adjusted position.
One object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable safety razor of a novel construction, which permits guard plates of the razor to control the degree of exposure of the cutting edges of the razor blade.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in a safety razor, of means whereby the degree of exposure of the cutting edges of a new blade may be reduced to permit closer shaves than is common with usual arrangements of such razors, and may be increased as the blade giecgmes dulled with use thereby extending the life of the With these and other objects in view that may appear while, the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which:

Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention consists of a safety razor in which the blade guard is arranged in two sections 10 which may be displaced transversely of the cutting edges 11 of the blade 12 through the coaction of a cam plate 13 and cam-follower studs 14 which latter are secured to the guard sections 10. The studs 14 are received by elongated slots 15 which are formed in the cam plate 13, which studs also serve to secure the latter member to the guard sections 10. The usual handle 16 and clamping plate 17 serve as the means for locking the guard sections 10 in an adjusted position.
As shown in Fig. 10, the clamping plate 17 is arranged in the form of an inverted shallow trough and is furnished with corner legs 18 for positioning the blade 12 with a centrally disposed threaded stud 19 for the securement of the handle 16 and with elongated longitudinal pro ections 20 which pass through the usual central longitudinal perforation 21 formed in the blade 12, through perforations formed by the inner edges of the guard sections 10, and through the centrally disposed longitudinal perforation 22 formed in the cam plate 13.
In order that the guard sections 10 may be maintained in proper alignment the inner edge of each of these sections is provided with a laterally projecting tongue 23 which is arranged for sliding engagement with a transverse recess 24 formed in the inner edge of the opposite section of the guard. Each of the guard sections 10 is provided in usual manner with cleaning slots 25.
The cam plate 13 is aflixed to the guard sections 10, for sliding movement longitudinally thereof, by the studs 14, which may be rivets as shown, and which are secured in pairs to each of the said sections and are received by the slots 15 formed obliquely in the cam plate 13. The cam plate 13 is formed with downwardly projecting terrriinal flanges 26 for manually positioning the said cam p ate.
The adjustment of the guard sections 10 relative to the cutting edges 11 of the blade 12 is obtained by loosening the handle 16 whereupon the desired adjustment can be eifected by a suitable longitudinal movement of the sliding cam plate 13. This movement, through the coaction of the slots 15 in the cam plate 13, and the studs or rivets 14 attached to the guard sections 10, will impart the desired lateral movement to the said guard sections thus exposing, tothe desired degree, the cutting edges 11 of the blade 12. The handle 16 is then retightened to secure the guard sections 10 in the adjusted position.
When a new sharp blade is inserted in the razor the guard sections 10 may be displaced laterally outward so that a minimum of the cutting edges of the blade are exposed thereby permitting closer shaves than is common with usual arrangements of this type of razor. Dulling of the blade through use is then countered by withdrawing the guard sections to expose a greater blade cutting area.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
In a safety razor, a guard plate divided longitudinally into two sections, rivets depending from each section of said guard plate adjacent their ends, a cam plate adapted for sliding movement longitudinally of said guard plate having oblique slots formed therein to slidably receive the rivets depending from the sections of said guard plate, depending flanges at each end of said cam plate for moving the cam plate longitudinally to expand or retract the sections of said guard plate, a clamping plate having a threaded stud extending between the sections of said guard plate and through an opening in said cam plate, and a handle threaded on the stud of said clamping plate having clamping engagement with said cam plate to secure the guard sections and cam plate in adjusted position.
