2 Claims. (Cl. 5-336) My invention relates, generally, to infants cribs and mattresses and, more particularly, to the body-covering means which overlies the mattress and is detachably connected thereto and to the crib or other mattress support and the principal object of my invention is,

To provide simple, practical and eiicient mattress and body covering means which may be readily applied to or removed from the mattress and crib and the said means including a readily-adjustable band or strap of soft fabric or the like, which passes over the body below the arms of the infant lying on the mattress cover, thus holding said infant in proper and comfortable position in the crib and at the same time permitting more or less free movement, change of position, and rolling over of the infants body as well as restraining the infant from crawling out from beneath the bed covers or from becoming tangled and twisted therewith.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, particularly to the structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 10 designates a rectangular sheet or section of suitable fabric, which may be treated to render it waterproof if desired, of sufficient size to cover the top, sides and ends of a mattress such as M, and secured to the head end of said cover is a transverse strip 11 which overlies only the head end portion of the mattress.

A transverse reinforcing strip 12 is connected to the outer edge of strip 11, and a similar strip 13 is secured to the foot end of cover 10. The width of cover is somewhat greater than the length of strips 11 and 13 and thus, when properly secured to said last mentioned strips, gathers 14 are formed at the ends of cover 10 to produce a certain amount of fullness and thereby enable the sides of cover 10 to lit downover the sides of the mattress.

Ties 15 are secured to vand project from the ends of strip 13 and from the outer ends of strip 11, thus enabling the cover to be detachably secured to the frame of a crib, bassinet or other mattress supporting frame. Secured on top on cover 10 adjacent one side thereof and a short distance downwardly from strip 11, is one end of a flexible strap or band 16, which extends across said cover and through a pair of rings or eyes 17, one disposed above the other and which are secured on top of the cover by a looped strap 18 on the opposite side of said cover from band 16. This strap or band is adapted to overlie the infant positioned on the mattress cover 10 and in order that the effective portion of said strap, which overlies the infant, may be readily adjusted in length, the free end of said strap is doubled to form a loop L, which passes upward through the lower one of rings 17, thence through the adjacent end of the upper ring, with the end 2,700,778 Patented Feb. 1, 1955 portion of said strap inwardly from said rings, underlying the main body portion of the strap between its anchored end and the rings. (See Fig. 3.)

Thus, the rings 17 provide a simple and convenient adjusting means for the infant body retaining strap, and said rings are devoid of tongues or other strap projections which might scratch or cut the infant occupying the bed on which the covers are used.

Ties 19 project from the xed end of band 16 and from strap 18, for connection to the sides of the crib or bed frame.

The member which overlies and serves as a cover for the infant lying on the mattress cover comprises a substantially rectangular sheet 20 of fabric, with transverse reinforcing strips 21 at both ends, the material in said sheet being gathered adjacent each strip 21, to give the desired fullness to the width of the sheet; and secured to the ends of strips 21, are ties 22 for attachment to the crib or bed frame.

The length of cover sheet 20 is substantially equal to the length of mattress cover 10 from strip 12 to strip 13.

In the use of my improved cover, the infant is laid on the central portion of mattress cover 10 and strap 16 is now engaged in rings 17 and adjusted so as to fit fairly snug over the infants body just below the arms. When thus positioned, the infant may roll over and move for limited distances on the mattress cover, but, due to the restraining strap 16 and overlying body cover 20, secured to the sides of the crib or bed frame by ties 22, the infant is prevented from crawling out from between the covers or twisting same about its head. The babys head projects beyond upper strip 12 and lies on strip 11 at the head of the mattress cover.

In Fig. 5, I have shown a modified form of the mattress cover which is formed of suitable fabric and comprises a rectangular cover 23, depending side walls 24 and end walls 25, and projecting inwardly from the lower edges of side walls 24 and end walls 25 are horizontally disposed

26 and 27, respectively, which are adapted to lie beneath the underside of a mattress adjacent its sides and ends.

At one end of this cover, preferably the end that covers the foot of the mattress, the ends of the inwardly presented

26 and 27 are separated in order to facilitate applying the cover to a mattress and said ends are provided with ties 28 in order to connect the ends of the strips when said cover is placed on the mattress.

In Figs. 6 and 7, I have shown a modified construction particularly designed for use by older infants, or children aged from four or iive years up to seven or eight years, such structure including a rectangular mattress cover 29 to the side and foot edges of which are secured the corresponding edges of a body cover 30. Ties 33 are secured to all four corners of this form of cover for mounting same on a crib or bed frame.

Parallel slits are formed in body cover 30 and extend from the head end thereof part way toward the foot of the cover, said slits being provided along their edges with conventional hook fasteners 34, which are engaged and disengaged by sliding members 35. That portion of cover 30 between the fasteners 34 provides a closure which may be readily opened and closed when a child is getting into or out of the two-ply cover. Ties 35al are secured to the head corners of cover 30 for attachment to the sides of a crib or bed.

Thus, it will be seen that I have provided a cover for the mattresses of infants cribs which is simple in structure, inexpensive of manufacture, capable of being readily applied to or removed from the mattress and crib and which is very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.

Minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved restraining cover may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a cover for infants` crib mattresses, a substantially rectangular flexible sheet adapted to cover a crib mattress, a transverse strip secured to the head end of said mattress cover, ties secured to the corners of said mattress cover and to both ends of said transverse strip, and an adjustable body restraining strap overlying said mattress cover and secured to the side portions thereof a short distance inwardly from the head end of said mattress cover.

2. The cover for infants crib mattresses as set forth in claim 1, with ties secured to the ends of said body restraining strap.
