UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN c. BURRss, or cAnRoLLroN, iLLiNoIs;
LIFTINe-JACK.
A SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,012, dated January 2, 1833.
\ Applicationiled October 21,1882. (No model.) 4
To colt whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN` C. BURRUss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lifting-jacks; and it consists -in the peculiar construction of the salme, substantially as will In order toenableothers skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, invwhich- Figure lisa front elevation of my invention. lti g. 2 is a central vertical section ofthe Same.
y head, B.
A represents a tube or shaft having a base, A', and upon its upper end a flange or collar, a, from which projects on one side a lug, a, and the other side is notched or recessed, d, as seen at a2.
, In the tube A, and projecting' somewhat above it, is a loose bar, B, provided with a On this bar B, ]'ust above the tube A., is a loose ring, C, having its 'central opening larger than the bar B and cut through it at anangle. This ring is on one side of its under face formed with alug, c, which may be dropped into the recess a2 in the ilange a, in which case the ring will lie at upon the tube or standard A and allow the bar B to rise and fall freely. lf, however, the ring be raised and turned until the lug c rests upon the' flange a, the ring will beheld in this position at an angle to the rod or bar, and while allowingit to be lifted-thc edges of its central opening will bite upon the rod and prevent its being lowered.
D is a sash-head, also provided with a diagonal centralopening larger than the rod or bar B,.and under its rear side with two ears, 'd d, between which is pivoted` the upper end of a lever, E. Just below this point this lever is pivoted between two links, D', which are secured at their lower ends'to the lug a ofthe flange con the upper end of the tubular standard A. The head or casting D, being secured to the links `D at one side of its center, has always a tendency to twist or set at an angle on the rod B. Y
When the jack is to be used the lever is raised to lower the head or clutch D until it will go no farther, and the rod B drawn up with the other `hand until it is of the proper height to engage with the object to be lifted.
The lever now being depressed, the clutch D is twisted and grasps the rod B firmly. The descent of the lever lifts the rod B, with the weight, against which it bears, and the upper ends of the links D pass inward until they are upright, and the three pivot-points of the links and lever are directly over each other, and the rod can be lifted no farther. When it is desiredto lower the weight this action is simply reversed. If one stroke of the lever is not enough to lift the weight to the height required, the ring C is turned until its lug rests upon the collar or ange c and takes the weight off the head D. Thelever is then raised and the head slips down for a fresh grasp of the rod. 'lo lower the jack in this position the ring C is turned until it falls t0 a horizon-"f what Iclaiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lifting-jack, a lifting-head provided with a diagonalopening through which passes the lifting-rod, and connected at one side of its center with an operating-lever, whereby the head slips easily down on the rod, but twists and tightly grasps it when being raised, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The locking-ring C, having a lug,- c, in combination with the standard A, provided with recess c2 and an elevating-bar, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
`3. In a lifting-jack, the standardA A, having In testimony whereof I affix my signature in lug a', recess a2, and elevating-bar B, in oompresence of two witnesses. binaition with the locking-ring C., having a. lug., c, and the lifting-head D, having a diagonal JOHN C. BURRUSS.
5 centra] opening, and pivoted at one side of its A center to the lever E, connected by links Dl i Witnesses: to the standard A, substantially as and for the E. A. DooLITTLE, purpose seb forth. Crus. H. HoDGEs.
