ELAsTlo ROLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 2l39,828, dated January 2, ISES.
u Application filed October 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY'F. CASE, of South Manchester, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Rolls; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of ref'- erence marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My improvement rela-tes to rolls which arerequired to be used in various sorts ot" machines where thesurface ot' the roll must be elastic and yielding, this being especially vthe case with the coaching-rolls in cylinder paperanachines, to which my improvement is particularly adapted.
'lheobject ot' my invention is lo provide a roll which shall have a surface ot' great elasticity, and at the same time avoid having a longitudinal seam where the elastic covering is joined together.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a side view ot' my improved roll with part ofthe elastic covering removed, so as to show thc interior construction and a section of the elastic covering. Fig. 2 is a view of the saine turned .one-quarter round, and leaving one end of the covering loose to show its construction.
A is the body of the roll. It may be made ot' wood or ot' any ofthe customary materials, and can be turned to any required length or diameter. It has journals or bearings at the ends, adapted to turn in suitable sockets or boxes in the usual manner.
B is the elastic coverinv. It is made ofrubber', and is wound spirally upon the body A, so
as not topresent a seam along the length ot' the roll. At the endsit is to cut tapering, so that when wound it presents a square at surt'ace at the end ot' the roll, as shown at the left ot' the drawings. My improved elastic covering` for the roll is composed ot' the back C, which is ot' uniform width and dat, and when wound on the roll forms an even and true surface for the outside ot' the roll, and of the posts D, which are castor made in one piece with the back C, and are placed at such distances apart as will support the back, at the same time acting as compressible springs to allow it to yield when required. These posts or springs rest directly upon the surface of the body A, and, being all ot' an exact height, cause the outside to present a true cylindrical form.
My improvement is part'cularly adapted for the couching-rolls of cylinder paper-making machines. pulp ott' from the cylinder, upon which it is deposited from the vat, and around which the felt band runs for this purpose. These rolls require to be very yielding and elastic to give a tine and uniform quality to the paper. In addition to this purpose, my improved roll is adapted for any other use requiring a very yielding and elastic surface.
lVhat I claim as my invention isl. An improved elastic roll consisting of a central cylinder spirally wound with a rubber covering, provided with the ilat back C and the spring-posts D, substantially as described.
2. An elastic covering for rolls, composed of the dat. back C and the spring-posts l), at tached to its inner surface, substantially as described.
