MARTIN GRONlN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FIRE EXTINGUISHING ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,777, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed November 7, 188:2. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVIARTIN ORONIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VV-ashington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fire-Extinguishing Engine; and 1 do declare the tollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
My invention relates to an improved combined steam and chemical apparatus forextinguishing tires.
The object of my invention is to rapidly extinguish fires by means ofa chemical substance injected under mechanical pressure onto the fire, whether combined or not with the ordidary stream of water thrown by a steam fireengine.
Myinvention consists in a fire-extinguishingengine apparatus for ejecting chemical substances, under-a mechanical pressure generated .by the action of one or more detachable supplemental pumps arranged on the engine, onto the tire. Said chemical substances are in their nature of such a character as to vaporize or be converted into a gas the moment they strike the tire, the gases generated being of such a nature as to antagonize the fire and quickly subdue the flames.
' My invention further consists in certain other details of construction, which will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a steam fire-engine with a storagetank and pump for ejecting chemical substances onto the fire. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the devices shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the supplementary pump and tank, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the supplementary pump and the tank on line :0 m. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side view of the pumps and operating mechanism. Fig. 6
is a vertical section of a portable chemical-liquid tank with pump attached. Fig. 7 isatop view of the main-pump pipe, with connections to the Supplementary pump. Fig. 8 is a View of a twin connection or combined hose-pipe coupling.
In the drawings, Adesignates a tire-engine, of any desirable or suitable construction. Itis provided with a storage-tank, B, of any desired form, for holding the chemical substances of any kind that will be efficient in subduing flames. The engine is provided with the usual main pump, A, and feed-pumpcAf', and a supplemental or auxiliary punip, which may be operated by the working parts of the engine or detached therefrom. 'I have shown the pump-rod a of this pump connected to the yoke F by means of a pin, a, and lug a on the'said yoke, so that it can be easily detached when not required. Any other suitable operating mechanism may be employed to operate the pump 0. It is connected by the pipe 6 with the storage-tank B, and draws its supply therefrom. An air-chamber, D, is connected by means of pipe 0 with the supplemental or chemical pumpQG, by which the pressure is made more steady. The pump 0 is provided with a nozzle, (hand arranged so that the chemical substances can be thrown onto the tire in a pure state-as, for instance, Where the fire has just started, or has made but little headway, or is within easy reach of the firemen; or it can be forced under pressure through pipes 6, connecting with the outletnozzles f g, into the stream of water which is being thrown onto the fire, and thus the main stream of? water is made the vehicle for conveying the chemical substances onto the fire. This is an important feature'in the extinguishment of fires, as it frequently occurs that fires originate in the upper stories of high buildings and in locations not easily approached; and, furthermore, it frequently happens that fires have made such headway before an alarm is sounded or before the tire-department responds to the alarm that the men cannot approach near enough to use the chemical appliance alone, and in such cases-the chemical substances can be combined with the main stream of one or more engines, and thus are conveyed or forced to a great distance, and the tire can be easily extinguished.
In cases where the necessary supply of the chemical compound or substance cannot be carried on the fire-engine, special tank wagons or tenders G, Fi 6, can be employed to accompany such engine to the fire. and as fast as the compound is drawn from the enginetank a fresh supply can be drawn or forced from the tenders into the tank B by means of pumps IL or other appliances, which are connected by means of a hose to a nozzle, t, and a suitable connection, It, on the storage-tank B.
In the densely-populated and business portions of cities I may find it desirable and convenient to have s ationary tanks or reservoirs i'or storing the chemical substances, and have connectedtherewithappliancesfor forcing said chemicals into the reservoir on the engine; or by means of a t in coupling, H, such as described in my patent of June 3, 1873, No. 139,550, I may force it direct from the stationary tanks into the water-pump of the engine, or into the stream of water by nozzle Z aiterit leaves the pump. Suitable valves are arranged in all the connections or nozzles, as may be 1 equired.
E designates the reel for the hose, to be attached to the pump (J in case the chemical substances are to be used alone, and by means of suitable valves or cocks a stream of the chemical substance alone or chemicals combined with water can be thrown upon the tire.
With my appliances an ordinary tire-engine may be used in the place of the chemical tire- (*Xtltlgltisllel's now in use, in Wllltll gas-pressure is employed, and by the aid of the pump or mechanical [nessure and hose an ett'ective jet can be thrown, as any desired pressure can be obtained at will and a constant stream thrown until the tire is extinguished.
The chemical substance or compound which I propose or prefer to use is what is known as the Zaffle Lire-Extinguishing Compound, but I. do not confine my self to it,asan y chemical substances or compounds, or combinations of the same which hold absolute sway over combustion may be used. I combine the said compounds with water derived from a tireplug, reservoir, or other source of supply. A separate steamengine may, it desired, be used to operate the auxiliary pump.
I am aware that itis not broadly new to combinea lire-extingnishingfluid with a stream of water; also, that such fluids have been carried in tanks with on npartmcnts, from which it is ejected on the fire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to s cure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a fire-extinguishing engine provided with a tank for a chemical extinguishing-fiuid,of a main water-pump with an auxiliary chemical-pump located on said engine, and constructed to be operated thereby and detached theretrom, substantially as and for the purpose set. forth.
2 The combination. in a tireextinguishing engine provided with a tank for a chemical extinguishing tluid, of a main *ater-pump, an auxiliary chemical-pump located on said engine and constructed to be operated thereby. Wllll connections to said tank, the main water outlet nozzles, an air-vessel, and a separate nozzle for attachment of hose, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in a tire-extinguishing engine provided with a tank for a chemical extinguishing compound, of a main water-pump, an auxiliarychemical-pump locatedou said engine and operated thereby, and suitable connections, with an auxiliary portable tank for replenishing the tank on the engine, substantia ly as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN ORONIN.
