TAG.
Patented Deo. 26, 1882.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMOND A. WARREN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AssrGNOR Cro HtMsELF AND THOMAS J. MOORE, OF sAME PLAGE.
TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,753, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed January 21, 18E-. (No modelj To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND A. WARREN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tags, of which the following is a specitication.
Uy invention relates to merchandise or shipping tags, which are commonly made ofpaper; and the object ot the invention is to prevent ro the tearing ofsueh tags, and also prevent thetn from curling up or being rutnpled in use.
To this end the invention consists in a paper tag composed of two plies or thicknesses, and provided with a strengtherring-frame composed ofa wire or string extending around the tag near the margin, thereby cont'orming'to the shape of the tag, and secured between the two plies or thicknesses by pasting or eement'ing them together both inside and Outside Of the 2o frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of atag embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a face view of one ot the plies or thicknesses of which the tag is composed and the strengthening wire or string, and Fig. d represents a face view of a tag of modified form.
Similar letters of reference designate correspending parts in all the iigures.
A designates the tag, which is composed ot' two plies or thicknesses of Manila paper or other material of which such tags are usually formed, and which are of the same size and outline.
B designates a wire or string, which is inserted between the two plies or thicknesses, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, and which is carried entirely around the margin of the tag ata little 4o distance from its edge, so as toform astrengthening-frame. The two end portions ofthe wire or string B issuefrotn between the plies or thicknesses, and they may be twisted at B, Figc. l and 3, and be prolonged beyond the twist, so as to form ends B2, which are long enough to provide for attaching the tag conveniently to any article on which it is desired to use it. Instead of having the two end portions of the wire or string prolonged to any 'considerable length, [may form inthe wire or 5o string B a loop or c ve, a, as seen in Fig. 4, through which the tying string or wire may be inserted. After the wireor stringB is inserted thetwopliesorthicknesses are cetnented, glued,
or pasted together throughout theirextentand on both sides of `the wire or string B. This holds the twoplies together, and secures the wire or string properly in place.
Where an ordinary tag commences to tear, only the strength ofthe paper prevents it from 6o being torn entirely in two; but ifthe margin of this tag begins to tear it will stop as soon as the strengthening wire or string is reached.
I am aware that tags have been made in which the fastening wire or device is secured to the tag by folding over and pasting down a portion of the tag, thereby forming two plies or thicknesses, between which the wire or device is held; but this has been done simply to prevent the tearing'out of the fastening de- 7o vice, and not with a view to prevent, and has not prevented, the tearing of the tags elsewhere.
Ido not claim a tag of the kind just described as included in my invention. By my invention I form a strong' frame, surrounding the tag near its margin, which will protect the tag against heilig torn at any point, as the slightest tear will be prevented from extending inward by the frame, and which will also 8ol prevent the curling up Or rutnpling of the tag.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tag A, composed of two plies or thicktresses, and provided with the strengtheningframe B, composed of a string or wire extending around the tag near the margin and secured between the two plies or thicknesses by pasting or cementing them together both inside and outside the frame, whereby the tag is 9o l protected all around the margin against being torn, and is prevented, from curling up or becoming rumpled, substantially as herein described.
