WIRE BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,821, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed August 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GRANVILLE NICHOLSON, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inWire Bale-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire balebands which have at one end an eye, and the other end of which is left plain and straight, so that when the band is to be applied to a bale the plain end may be inserted through the eye and secured by bending it back and twisting it.
Various plans have been devised for securing a considerablebody of metal-in the eye, whereby a broad bandwillbc produced in the tail end of the wire when inserted through the eye and bent back upon itself, so that the wire will be less likely to break than if a sharp bend was there produced.
My invention consists in the combination, in a Wire bale-band having at one end an eye, of a main or band wire, which is doubled or lapped once upon itself, and one or more reenforcing pieces of wire, which are separate and distinct from each other and from the band-wire, and which are doubled or lapped each upon itself and intertwisted with the doubled or lapped portion ofthe main or band wire, as particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a View of the end port-ions of a baleband connected or tied and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the end portion of the main Wire lapped upon itself preparatory to forming the head and eye; and Fig. 3 represents a separate re-enforcing piece of wire, also lapped upon itself or doubled.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Adesignates the main or band wire at one end, on the head of which is formed the eye A*, and the other or tail end, A, of which is in tying passed through the eye and then bent back or lapped upon itself and twisted, as at a.
The component parts of the head end of the band, including the eye A*, are clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Ifirst bend back, double, or
Wire, as shown in Fig. 2, and may then provide one or more separate and distinct pieces of wire, B, such as are shown in Fig. 3, the piece being bent back, doubled, orfolded upon itself, so as to form portionsB B, which are approximately parallel. The reenforcing' piece B- may then be incorporated with the lapping portions A b of themain or band wire by lay ing it thereon and intertwisting the parallel portions B B of the re-enforcing piece with the portions A b of the main or band Wire. I thus form an eye, A*, which is double through out, and when the tail end, A, is attached or tied a long bend, c, is formed therein, and'will not be liable to break. I may employ asingle re-enforcing piece, as described,or two or even three such separ'ate pieces,if desired, the parallel and lapping portions all being intertwisted,as described, and in this way may make a band, the tail of which will be connected with the eye by a very long or broad bend. The separate re-enforcing piece is also very advantageous, because it may be made of wire larger or smaller than the main or band wire, and therefore a re-enforcing piece of large wire may be incorporated witha bandwire of small size, thereby giving a suificient body in the eye to avoid a short bend in the tail without making the band of large wire throughout.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the sole and only purpose of the re-enforcing piece or pieces, which are madeseparate from the band-wire, is to produce a large body of metal in the eye, so that when the tail end of the band is inserted through the eye and bent back a broad. easy bend will be produced in such tail end, and it will be less likely to break; hence it is advantageous to incorporate a short re-enforcing piece of wire of large size with a band-wire of comparatively small size.
What I-claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
In a wire bale-band having at one'end an eye, A*, the combination of the main or band wire A, havinga portion, 1), doubled or lapped upon itself, and one or more re-enforeing pieces of wire, B, which are separate and disor more separate re-enforcing pieces of wire tinct from each other and from the band-wire I combine to form an eye in which isacompara- A, the re-enforcing pieces being each doubled tively large body of metal.
or lapped upon itself and intertwisted with GRANVILLE NICHOLSON. the double or lapped portion of the main or Witnesses: band wire, substantially as herein described, FREDK. HAYNES, whereby the main or band wire and the one EMIL SCHWARTZ.
It is herebi certified that in Letters Patent'No. 315,821, granted April 14, 1885, upon the application of Granville Nicholson, of New York, New York, for an improvement I in Wire Bale-Ties, errors aippear in the printed specification requiring the following corrections, viz: In line 42, page 1, the comma after the word end should be omitted, and the following word, on, should read or; and that the Letters Patent should be reed with these corrections therein to make it conform to the record of the casein the Paitent Office.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 5th day of May, A. D. 1885.
