UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
HENRY S. SMILEY, OF MEADVILLE, MISSOURI.
cupLTlvAToR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,732, dated December 26, 1882.
Application led August 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. SMILEY, of Meadville, in the county of Linn and State ot' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cultivators for corn, Snc.; and it consists in certain improvements iu the construction and operation ot' the same.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of twin cultivators embodying my improvements and attached to the axle of thesulky. Figa? .is a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the standards.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the beams ot' the cultivators, each having a suitable handle, B, pivoted thereto atitslower end, C, and heldv in position by an inclined plate or brace, D, also pivoted atitslowerend, E, and provided with a series of pert'orations, F, through one of which and a perforation, G, in handle B a transverse holding-pin, H, 'is passed.
0n ,beam A are arranged suitably-disposed standards I. The latter consist of a. disk or plate, J, pivoted to the side of the beam by a pin or bolt, K, and provided on its opposite side with a segmental slot, L, in which Works a set-screw, M, for regulating the position of the front end of the disk or plate.
N is a shank or standard projecting laterally from plate J, and provided near the outer end 'with a slot, O, through which passes the spring cultivator-blade P, the position of the latter heilig regulated by asetscrew,Q, working atright angles to slot 0.
It designates suitable brace-rods extending from the ends ot' the horizontal standard-stem N to the beam A.
To the front ot' beam A is swiveled, so as to be capable of only lateral movement, theusual elevis, S, comprising a n-sha-ped block, T, through the ends of which is passed a transverse pin, U, on which is pivoted a verticallymoving plate, V, which is adjusted on top the sulky-axle W. Under the latter is placed a separate clamping-plate', X, and plates V and X are caused to bind on the axle by bolts Y and nuts Z. In this manner the cultivators maybe readily attached or detached, as de sired. j
The opera-tion and advantages of my invention 'will be readily understood. It is simple,
inexpensive, readily adjustable, and efficient.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' l I The combination,- wth the beam, ofthestandard-plate pivoted thereto and having'the integral lateral shank formed with a horizontal
