Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERTRAM G. SEEBAOH, OF PERU, ILLINOIS.
COMPOSITION FOR CLEANING AND POLISHING METALS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,722, dated December 26, 1882.
(No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM GEORGE SEE- BAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Oomposition for Cleaning and Polishing Metals, of which the following is a specification.
My composition is composedof the following ingredients, prepared as stated: finelypowdered quartz, one hundred and sixty parts; palm-oil, thirty two parts; kerosene, sixty parts or a sufficient quantity to bring the whole to the consistency of a soft mass or paste. These ingredients should be employed in a pure form, and are thoroughly mixed in any convenient manner. The mass thus obtained I perfume with the oil of mirbane or other substance. This, however, adds nothing to the cleaning or polishing qualities of the compound, and may be omitted, as it is not essential.
In using the above-named composition it is only necessary to dip a piece of cotton flannel into the same and apply it to the surface to be polished by slightly rubbing,'and then finishing off with a clean piece of cotton flannel or other smooth soft material. The surface thus treated will be thoroughly cleaned and a very high polish produced thereon.
The above composition-is free from the objections usually accompanying polishing compounds. It is convenient for use, contains no rious cleansing preparations, butdoes not give 4 as satisfactory results when applied to metals as I obtain by the use of palm-oil. is usually ad ulcerated with cotton-seed oil, and
does not rub up clean when used on metallic surfaces, but smears and leaves an unsightly hue, particularly on zinc. Palm-oil,on the contrary, is usually obtained pure. 1t rubs up clean, is not smeary, and leaves no hue. Be.- ing obtained generally in a particularly solidilied form, it will also make a paste that is less liable to he injuriously ati'ected by changes in temperature.
What 1 claim as my invention is- The herein-described composition of matter to be used for cleaning and polishing metals, consisting of finely-powdered quartz, palm-oil, and kerosene in about the proportions specified.
BERTRAM GEORGE SEEBAOH.
