Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
JOHN B. EMERSON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR POLISHING AND CLEANING METALS, 80c.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Cleaning and Polishing Compounds, invented by J QHN B. EMERSON, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York.
My invention consists of a compound for cleaning and polishing, composed of the in gredients and compounded in the manner hereinafter described.
To four ounces of water add one ounce of carbonate of ammonia, and let stand till thoroughly dissolved. Then mix sixteen ounces of Paris white, and add aniline or any desired material for coloring. The proportions may be somewhat varied without changing the general result.
This compound is for polishing and cleaning glass, silver-plate, .t-in-ware, &c., and all surfaces that require light friction and but little act-ion. It is only necessary to moisten a sponge or any fibrous material and rub the powder lightly over the surface, and dust it off with a piece of chamois-skin or fine cloth.
The compound is formed in a solid body. The ammonia is absorbed by the powder and insulated, so that it does not so readily escape. The ammonia, from its pungent and cutting qualities, readily dissolves and dissipates all dirt and extraneous matter upon the surface to be cleaned, while the Paris white acts as a frictional material. From its extreme fineness and freedom from grit the finest surfaces may be cleaned with it without danger of scratching or wearing. In this respect it is far superior to the gritty powders which have heretofore been used. By combining the ammonia with the powder in the .solid state it has much less tendency to escape than when in liquid form.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cleaning and polishing compound herein described, composed of the ingredients in the proportions substantially as specified, and prepared in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN B. EMERSON.
