` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. MCENALLY, OF LEARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,694, dated December 26, i882.
(Model.)
To all whom 'at may concern Beit known that I, JOSEPH lMcENALLY, of Clearfield, in the county of' Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Temporary Binder, ot' which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
lhe object ot' my invention is t0 materially facilitate the temporary binding ot' books, pamphlets, documents, otc. Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawiings.v forming part ofthis specitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an inside elevation of my im- Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same ou the line or a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view ot' the same on the line y y, Fig. 2.
The covers A are united by a flexible back, l?, in the usual manner.. From the inner surface and near the inner edge, C, ot' one cover A two or moreeyes or loops, D, project. From the corresponding edge ot' the inner surt'ace o f' the other cover two long flexible prongs or fasteners, H, project. A metal strip,E, is provided with two apertures, F, corresponding in position with the fasteners H and with two, longitudinal slots, G, correspondingin position with the eyes D. Adjoining to each slot G a hook, J, is pivoted to the strip E, so that the said hooks can be passed through the eyes D af'ter the same have been passed through the slots G. The flexible prongs or fasteners H are passed through the sheets K, that are to be bound, and then through the apertures in the strip E, which is placed on that leaf farthest t'ron1`that cover to which the fasteners H are secured. After the prongs have been passed through the apertures F, they are bent down tlat on the strips E, the hooks J of which are on the inner or under surface. The leaves are thus attached to one cover, and the other cover is then folded down over them, sothat theeyes D will pass through the slots G, upon which the hooks J are turned to pass through those parts ot' the eyes projecting from the inner surface of' the strip (l, whereby the other cover will also be held to the sheets.
Books, pamphlets, and other papers and documents can thus be bound temporarily'` very easily aml rapidly, and both covers will be held to the papers that are to be bound.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pa tent- In a binder, the combination, with the covers hooks J, substantially as herein shown and described, and f'or the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH B. MCENALLY.
