Description

N, PETERS, PHOTO L THOGHA PHER umTED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
VOSCO M. CHAFEE, OF XENIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND C. DE WITT SMITH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CLAMP FOR MAKING oLEvIsEs.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vosoo M. CHAEEE, of
i Xenia, in the county of Clay and State of Illinois, have invented a Clevis Clamp or Tongs for Holding, Bending, and Punching Clevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, the same making a part of this specification.
In the said drawings Figure 1, is a side view, as it is when opened for releasing the clevis when finished. Fig. 2 is also a side view showing the clevis clamp or tongs in position for holding the clevis when it is being bent into the desired form. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of one of the aws detached. Fig. 4 is a front or end view of the jaw.
The same letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
My invention furnishes a blacksmiths tool which greatly facilitates the construction of clevises, and is simple in construction, not liable to get out of order, and of but little expense in manufacture.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction.
A and A' represents the jaws of the clevis clamp and may be made of cast or wrought iron. B, and B' the handles for operating the jaws, which are secured to the jaws as hereinafter described.
c c are ears on each side of the end of the jaws. the central projection which forms the slots a, a for the reception of the teeth in the clevis,
D, D are the plates which are cast or wrought with the lower jaw A.
d is a groove through which temper pin or bolt passes which secures the ends of the clevis to each other thereby rendering the clevis complete and ready for use.
l1. is an eye on plate g to which the handle 26,968, dated January 31, 1860.
B is secured to the upper jaw. Handle B is secured to the lower jaw by means of rivets or any well known means of fastening.
f is the pin which passes through the inner end of the jaw A' and is secured to the plates D, D, thereby forming the hinge. These plates D, D, are 0f suflicient width to receive the jaw A', and the bolt f passing through them and the inner end of the jaw A', forms a substantial hinge.
I will now proceed to describe the operation of my invention.
I place the clamp on the anvil, put the clevis in the groove, which is formed by the compression of the upper and lower jaws as shown Figs. 2 and 4, and then bring the handle B', 1n parallel position with handle B, grasp them in the hand, pressing the handles B and B' closely together. Ihe lever B' being bent as shown in Fig. 2 when closed binds on the lower jaw at z', compressing the jaws firmly together holding the clevis securely inthe groove which is formed by the aws, then with a hammer I bend the clevis in the groove around the ears c of said clamp, after which I punch the temper pin holes over the hole d, then throw back the handles B and B open the jaws and release the clevis, which is now perfectly formed and complete.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my clevis clamp or tongs, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The clevis clamp or tongs composed of the jaws A, and A' constructed as described and operating in the manner specified.
2. I also claim the combination of the jaws A and A' with the handles B and B' or their equivalents for operating the jaws in the manner described.
VOSCO M. CHAFEE.
