lit-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THADDEUS C. JOY, F TITUSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA..
STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION, forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,582, dated :December 26, 1882. Application filed July 1:2, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUs C. JOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Titusville, in the count-y of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usel'nl Steam-Generator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates specially to improvements in the steam-generators shown in Letters Patent to me, numbered 209,895, 233,624, and 258,075, such generators comprising a watertank, heating-sections, and steam-drum sections, which parts or sections are united by screw-holtsandtlangesorother suitable means, and are made to communicate with one another by pipes; and the object of my improvement is to so construct steam-generators of' this class that they may be readily taken apart and put together, and by using more or less of the respective sectional parts the generators may be made longer or shorter to suit different purposes.
My present invention will be clearly understood from the following specification, claims, andthe accompanying drawings,in which latter= Figure l isatop view of myimproved'steamgenerator. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same below the steam-drums. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section of the generator. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ot' one ol the heating-sections and steam-drums. Fig. 5 is an elevation of two such heating-sections and steam-drums placed opposite each other,`
as they are used in practice. Fig. 6 is au elevation of the two above-mentioned heatingsectious and steam-drums as they appear when united iu one piece. Fig. 7 is an elevation ot' 'a heater having a downward-extended steamdrum.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several Views. The steam-generator A is composed in the main of two watertanks,B, anumber ot' heating-sections, C, V-shaped waterchambers D,
. and steam-drum projections E.
tions.
4tanks B, so as to present. together' a flush top tures, so that with the aid ot' packiug'mate- 6 rial-such as asbestus-a perl'ect joint will be secured. Short connecting-pipes, suitably fastenedbetween and to the heating-sections and the water-tanks, will serve the same purpose asthehereinbefore-described connections without changingtheprinciple ofmyinvention.
Toeach heating-section C a V-shaped waterchamber, D, is attached by means ot communicating pipes d at the top and at the bottom, so as to alord steam and water communica- Upon each heating-section a steamdrum, E, is formed. The drums E have inclined sides c', which inclose spaces coinciding with the openings or passages c' in the heating-sections below, and thus conduct the draft over the V-shaped water-chambers D. The tops c2 ofthe steam-drums E are rectangular and join each other as well as the tops`of the surface.
An outlet, b, may be provided for the smoke, either through oneof the tanks B or any other suitable part of the steam-generator.
The above-described steam-generator may be placed upon a tire-pot ofsuitahle construction, or such lire-pot may be omitted, and the heating-sections C may he sufficiently lengthened to form a rechamber below the V- shaped water-chambers D.
The water-chambers D may he united in one piece with the steam-drums E, as shown 'in Fig. 7, and may he either l-shaped or ofother y suitable form.
Two heating -sections C, having steamdrums E, may be united,as seen in Fig. 6; or loo a heating-section C may be provided with an extended steam-drum, E, as seen in Fig. 7, and the V-shaped Water-chamber may be omitted.
These moditicationsin the arrangement and `construction ofthe heating-sections,'V-shaped Water-chambers, and steam-drums may be adopted without altering the principle ot' my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steaingenerator, A, the combination of the heating-sections C, water-chambers D, with steam-drums E, arranged in two parallel opposite rows, and two transverse water-tanks arranged at the ends thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a steam-generator, A, the water-tanks B and heating-sections C, having guttered sides and arranged between them,and having communicatingpassages c, substantially as described.
3. In a steam-generator, A, the heating-sections C, having guttered sides, and with projecting parts E, arranged in two parallel lines, and having communicating passages e, substantially as described.
4. In a steam-generator, A, the heatingssections C, having gnttered sides, and waterchambers D, arranged in two parallel lines, and having communicating passages d, sul)- stantially as described.
