UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. HANSON, OF SOHOOLGRAFT, MICHIGAN.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,571, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed May 8, [882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES EDGAR HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schoolcraft, county of Kalamazoo, State of 5 Michigan, have invented a new and useful Truss, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to trusses especially designed for supporting abdominal hernia.
It has for its object certain improvements [0 whereby the pad is more conveniently operated than heretofore.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a truss containing my improvements, andoFig. 2
is a cross-sectional and edge view on a line with the edge of spring 8 in Fig. l.
The truss-stock F F is covered with leather or other suitable materiahand has loops L L, with which means may be connected to secure 2 said stock around the person. The end ofthe stock A with which the pad B is connected is formed square.
D isa movable collar, located on said square portion, and is held in given, positions by 2 5- means of screw a. Th us the pad may be nicely adjusted to the exact location of the hernia, as in former devices.
A ratchet, R, is rigidly sesis a spring secured to the pad, its upper end being adapted to engage the ratchet R.
' This holds the pad and itssupportat any given pressing hard on the rupture, as shown by dot-' ted lines in Fig. 1, this pressure may be released by raising the spring S with said lever e, and,by swelling out the body, again throwing the pad outward, as shown by the plain portion of said figure.
As many pads as desirable may be located on a single stock and extended above or below the same, in accordance with the number and location of the hernia.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A truss-stock provided with the ratchet, the pad, pad-support, and spring-pawl, in combination with the cam-lever for disengaging the pawl from the ratchet, all substantially as set forth.
JAMES EDGAR HANSON. Witnesses: WILLIAM T. SMITH, I. L. WEST.
