COMBINED GATE HINGE AND LATCH Filed Jan. 27, 1953 /4} F fg. l0 If /2 Fig. 4 /2 Walter E .Slmpkms INVENTOR.
BY MWwqE/azg United States Patent COMBINED GATE HINGE AND LATCH Walter F. Simpkins, Jonesboro, Ark., assignor of one-third to Pat Simpkins and one-third to June Ragsdale Application January 27, 1953, Serial No. 333,479
1 Claim. (Cl. 16--147) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in combined gate hinges and latches, and the principal object of the invention is to permit a gate to be opened in either direction or from either end, as well as be completely removed when so desired.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, its durability, in its convenient operation and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a gate supported by the invention on a pair of gate posts;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the combined hinges and latches;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 44 of Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the general reference character designates a gate which is supported by a set of combined hinge and latch units 12 on a pair of gate posts 14. Although the units 12 are of opposite hands on the respective opposite sides or ends of the gate 10, they are similar in construction so that a description of one will suflice for all.
Each of the units 12 consists of a block shaped socket member 16, having secured thereto a suitable apertured strap 18 for mounting on a gate post. The socket member 16 is provided in the top thereof with an oval recess 20 and this recess is formed with a beveled undercut 22 which extends partly around the margin of the recess, as is best illustrated by the dotted lines in Figure 3.
A substantially cylindrical pin member 24 is removably and rotatably disposed in the recess 20 and is provided at the lower end with a beveled, projecting keeper lip 26 which is receivable in the undercut 22. The pin member 24 is also equipped with a laterally projecting, apertured keeper strap 20 for mounting upon a gate.
'Lhe configuration of the recess 20 is such that when the gate 10 is in its closed position, the pin member 24 and the keeper lip 26 may be withdrawn upwardly from the recess 20 by simply lifting upon the gate. In this manner, the entire gate may be removed from the fence, when so desired.
Moreover, the configuration and location of the undercut 22 is such that when the pin members 24 are disengaged from the socket members 16, at either side of the gate, the gate may be swung to an open position on the hinges at the relatively opposite side of the gate, whereby the pin members and lips 24 and 26 respectively will be rotated in the recesses of the associated socket members and the lips 26 will complementally be received in the undercuts 22, thus supporting the gate while swinging.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A combined gate hinge and latch, comprising a socket member adapted to be secured to a gate post and provided in the top thereof with a recess and with an undercut extending partly around the margin of said recess, said recess being closed at the bottom thereof, and a coacting pin member adapted to be secured to a gate, said pin member including a substantially cylindrical body removably and rotatably received in said recess, and a projecting keeper lip provided on the lower end of said body, said lip being receivable in said undercut, said pin having the lower end thereof and the bottom surface of the lip resting on the upper surface of the closed end of said recess, said undercut being bevelled downwardly in a direction away from the margin of said recess, said keeper being bevelled on the upper surface in a direction downwardly and away from said body, whereby rotation of said pin member will urge said body downwardly within said recess.
