To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM GRAHAM and WILLIAM H. STALEY, of London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and lmprov'ed Post-Hole-Boring Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
()ur invention relates to improvements in machines for boring postholes; and itconsists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate/corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is partlya side elevation and partly a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a. plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail ofthe borers. 'Fig. 4 is a detail of the adjustable driving-gear.
A represents the posts, and B the crossbars, of a supporting-frame to stand upon the ground between the places where the postholes 0 are to be bored.
E represents a horizontal frame of four timbers, in which the boring-shafts F are mounted by a revolving sleeve, G, and sliding blocks H, the said blocks being fitted in grooves I, to slide along the timbers for setting the borers also provided with stops J K to hold them in position. The
' sleeves G have a bevel-wheel, M, for being rorated to turn the borers, with which borers said sleeves connect by a pawl, N, on the sleeves, and a groove, 0, in the borer-shaft F. The wheels M are geared with the masterwheel P by wheels Q, shafts R, and pinions S. The shafts R are fitted in pinions S, and also in bearings T, secured to the'lower cross bar B, so that the shafts R will slide along with blocks H, carrying the borers. The shafts It, being square to connect properly with pinions S for transmitting thev motion, have a thimble, U, in bearings T, revolving with them, and giving the support to the shafts in said bearings. The boring-shafts F have a lever. W. connected at the upper end by a swivel, X, by which to raise them out of the ground when required, and the levers have a swiveled fulcrum, Y, allowing them to swing as the borers l are shifted along the frame E, and also contrived to shift the levers along said fulcrums to accommodate the shifting borers. The was ter-wheel P is located in the frame A B, and gears on its opposite sides with the pinions S of the respective borers, so that the backthrusts of the gearing of the respective borers are balanced one by the other. The said master-wheel P is provided with a sweep, Z, on its shaft A, to which-a-horse is to be hitched for applying the power.
The machine is designed for boring holes, say six, seven, and eight feet apart, according to the length of the boards to be used; but it may of course be constructed to be adjusted for any distances within practical limits. The machine here shown is designed to bore six feet apart when the two borers are set .in the inner positions, eight feet when both are set out, and seven feet when one is out and one in. The pawls N are constructed to spring into I the grooves O of the borers, and they are pro- F'vided with a lever, a, said pawls and levers I being mounted on the sleeve G and wheel M, suitably for connecting them and the borers when the borers are to be worked, and for disconnecting them when not required to work,
it being sometimes necessary to work one borer and not the other. The levers a will be fast-- ened by pins b in wheels M, to hold pawls N out of gear with the borer-shafts; or any other suitable device may be employed to connect and disconnect the borers. In practice the frame will be mounted on wheels for being moved about conveniently.
1 Having thus fully described our invention,
we claim as newand desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent 1. The combination, with the grooved boring-shafts F, of the rotary sleeves G, connected by the pawls N with said shafts, and the slide-blocks H, having stops J K, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of boring-shaft F, sleeve G, wheel M, and pawl having a groove for said pawl, substantially as described.
3. The combination,with boring-shaft F and N, said boring-shaft 95 sleeve G, of the le'verVV,swiveled to said shaft wheels Q and M, and the adjustable boringand being adjustable on its fulcrum, tegether shaft F, substantially as specified. with the said boring-shaft, arranged adjustably along the frame, substantially as speci- 5 fled.
