A. H. PHELPS.
PILLOW SHAM HQLDER. No. 269,107. Patented Dec. 12, 1882.

ATTORNEYS N: PEIERS. "nab-1mm, VII-hum 9. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT EIGE.-
AUGUSTUS H. PHELPS, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
PlLLOW-SHAM HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 269,107, dated December 12, 1882,
Application filed October 9, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS H. PHELPS, of East Saginaw, in the c'ountyof Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention,w.hich will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of the head-board of abed to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line m, Fig. 2; and Fig. etis a detailview,in perspective,of one of the spring hinges on holders.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted'by like letters of reference.
' This invention relates to pillow-sham holders, and is an improvement on the device for which Letters Patent No. 259,911 were granted which will he hereinafter fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the headboard of a bed, to which my improved shamholder is attached.
B is a rod or shaft, made up of two piecesor sections, 0 O, the inner ends of which are slitted longitudinally, as at D.
E is a connecting-sleeve, which may be made of sheet metal, to receive the inner slotted endsof the pieces 0, which are held by means of pins or screws F,. inserted transversely through the sleeve E. The sections 0 G 'of shaft B are provided with outward-projecting parallel arms or bails G, of stout wire. The method described of joining the pieces or sections 0 prevents either of them from turning in relation to the other, thus retaining the bails G in the same position.
H is the swinging frame which supports the shame. Said frame consists of two light par- (No model.)
allel bars, I I, connected by straps J, one or both of which slide and are adjustable upon the bars I. The rear sides of the straps J have spring-hooks K for pivoting them upon the bails G, which thus support the swinging frame H. The straps J, being adjustable, may be readily moved to correspond with the position of the bails G alter the rod or shaft B has been lengthened or shortened in order to fit a particular bed.
The spring hinges or holders L, which are secured to the side posts, M, of the head-board, and in which the shaft B is journaled, are made each of a single piece of stout wire, bent into shape so as to form an arm, N, provided at its inner end with loops 0 to receive the fastening-screws. At the outer endof arm N is formed a loop or book, P; over the latter an eye, Q. From thence the Wire is passed downward and coiled, so as to form a spring, B, below arm'N. Thev end extends diagonally in an upward and rearward direction, forming an elastic finger, S, adjoining the hook P and eye Q. These holders may be secured in any suitable manner to either the sides or fronts of the side posts, M. The ends of shafts B, which are journaled in the eyes Q, are provided with pins T, bearing upon the fingers S. When the shaft B is turned in order to raise the swinging frame to which the sharns have been suitably attached, the pins T pass the spring-fingers S and enter the hooks P, where they are held by the pressure of said fingers, thus retaining the shaft B and the swinging frame in position. By exercising sufficient pressure the shaft may be readily turned back to its. original position, or to any desired position.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The rod or shaft B, consisting of sections 0, having slots 1), in combination with the sleeve E and set-screws F, as set forth.
2. The shaft B, consisting of a sleeve, E,
andadjustable or extensible sections G, having bails G, in combination with the frame H, consisting of bars I and adjustable connectingstraps J, having hooks K, substantially as set forth.
3. The spring hinge or holder L, consisting of the arm N, having loops 0, hook P, eye Q,
spring R, and spring-finger S, all substan- 1n testimony'that Iclaim the foregoing as tially as set forth. my own I have herennto'affixed my signature 1-0 4. The herein-described improveddevice for in presence of two Witnesses.
holding pilloW-shams, consisting essentially T 1 i 5 of the spring hinges or holders L, a shaft, B, ALUUSTUS PHELPS having pins T and bails G, and the swinging Witnesses: I frame H, all substantially as and for the pur- ADOLPH BOENTMAN, pose set forth. FRED. ANNEKE.
