UNITED STATES Pari-awr OFFICE.-
HORSE- POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,057, dated December 12, 1882.
I Application tiled October 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all Qc/Loin it may concern.-
Be it known that l, A. Gr. HOLBROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livermore, in the county of McLean and State of ing drawings.
Figure l is a top view of my improved horsepower. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to horse-powers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction ofthe saine which will be hereinafter i'ully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. f
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame; B B, the axles, and C the transporting-wheels. Frame A has a central cross-piece, D, provided with a pintle, E, upon which isjournaled the master-wheel F, to which the sweeps Gr are suitably connected. The masterwheel has teeth or cogs H upon its under side, and is provided with an outward-projecting annular, iiange, I, which is supported upon travelers J, journaled upon brackets K upon the sides of the frame. Travelers L, bearin g upon the upper side or face of the master-wheel, are also journaled to brackets M at the ends of the frame. ,A
N is a shaft, journaled in suitable bearings in the rear end of the frame and in a crosspiece, O, of the latter. Said shaft carries at one end a pinion,P, engaging the master-wheel,
and at the other end a bevel-gear, Q, meshing with a pinion, R, upon a shaft, S, journaled vertically in cross-pieces O and T.. Shaft S carries at its lower end a large horizontal bandwheel, U. 1
'V V are vertical pulleys, journaled upon studs W, projecting downwardly from the frame, adjoining the band-Wheel U; and X X are horizontal pulleys, mountedupon brackets Y Y, projecting downwardly from the rear end of the frame, adjoining the pulleys V.
Z is a box hinged to the rear end of frame A, so that when not in use it may be folded up against said frame for transportation. Upon a transverse shaft, A', in said box arejournaled a pair of guide pulleys, B', parallel to the pulleys K.
C' is an inverted trough or box, tapering iu direction of its length, and having transverse shafts D', upon which are journaled pulleys E', arranged in any suitable manner, to guide the driving-belt F', which, by said box and by the box Z, is protected from exposure and prevented from being entangled.. Just beyond the end of box C the belt F' passes over the driving-pulley of the machinery to be operated.
The box G' is provided on its under side with cross-pieces G', forming brackets H', adjoining which stakes may be driven, so as to secure the box in position during operation. Box C' may also be suitably secured to box Z.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood.
My improved horse-power is exceedingly simple in construction, containing but four gear-wheels, thus avoiding loss of power by friction.
The belt by which motion is transmitted is, as will be seen, thoroughly protected during operation.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the frame, the horizontal master-wheel having cogs upon its under side, a horizontal shaft carrying a pinion engaging said master-wheel and a bevel-gear, a vertical shaft carrying a pinion meshing with said bevel-gear, and a large band-wheel and suitable travelers supporting and guiding the master-wheel, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a horse-power having a band-wheel, and a driving-belt for transmitting motion, ot' a hinged box having guidepulleys for said belt, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a horse-power having a band-wheel, and a drivin g-belt for transmitting motion,.of suitable boxes or inverted troughs adapted tocover and protect said driving-belt, and containing pulleys to guide the same, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the horse power having a band-wheel, and a driving-belt for transmitting` motion, of the hinged box oonmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in taining guide-pulleys for said beit, and in loose presence of two witnesses. box, likewise containing guide-pulleys, and provided on its under side with cross pieces, .ALBERT G' HOLBROOK' 5 forming brackets, by which said box may be Vitnesses:
secured in position, for operation as set forth. A. I. MUORE,
In testimony that I ciniln the foregoing as i GEO. RUDY.
