Description

(No Model.)
F. DE LORME.
SIGHT FOR FIRE ARMS.
Patented Dec. 12, 1882.
\ \-/\TNE55E5- Q.) -"Lii i l PATENT FFICEO FRANK DE LORME, OF CENTRAL SQUARE, NEW YORK.
SIGHT-FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,023, dated December 12, 1882. Application filed September 19, 1882. (No model.)
.7" 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK DE LORME, of Central Square, in the county of Oswego,in the State ofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gun-Sights, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and'exact description.
This invention relates to improved means for adjustingthe sight onthe barrel of a gun; and it consistsin the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter lully explained, and specifically set forth in the claim.
Referring to the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are transverse sections, taken respectively in front of and centrally through the sight; and 1 ig.3isal0ngitudinal section taken in the center of the barrel of the gun.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
B represents a rifle-barrel, and S the sight, which may be of any desired style or shape, fixed to a base, A, which is fitted to slidein a transverse dovetail groove or way, a, in the top of the barrel. This groove has a semi-cylindrical recess, 1', extending from the center in opposite direction part way the length of the groove. On one end of the aforesaid groove another similar but short semi-cylindrical recess forms a shoulder, b, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The sight-base A is provided on its under side with a screwthreaded channel, 0, extending nearly the length thereof, that end of the channel 0 which is over the shoulder 11 in the way abeing smooth.
dis the adjusting-screw, having its threaded portion or screw proper, 6, larger in diameter than its manipulating stem orend portion, and fitted into the recess 1* of the way a. The threads of said screw correspond with those of the channel 0 of the sight-base. From the end of the screw 0 projects a circumferentiallyreduced extension, which has a blank neck, 12,
adjacent to the screw e, and is screw-threaded from a point over the shoulder 12 to its extremity, as shown atf, and on this screwthreaded portion is fitted a jamnut, h, which, by its abutting against the shoulder 12, serves to bind the adjusting-screw so as to prevent it from turning.
The described devices areapplied to the barrel of the gun and operatedin the following manner: The adjusting-screw being placed in the recess 0', the base A of the sight is entered into the groove a and pushed up to the screw e,-and is then drawn farther into the groove by turning the adjusting-screw. The jam-nut h is then applied to the extension fof the adjusting-screw. To adjust the sight in its required position, the adjusting-screw is turned to move the sight into said position, and then, while holding the adjusting-screw with one hand, the clamping-nut his turned with other hand until it becomes firmly set against the shoulder b.
Havingdesciibed my invention, \vhat Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
ise The combination of the barrel having the groove or way (1., provided with the recess 1* and shoulder b, the sight-base A, fitted to slide in the way a, and provided with the screwthreaded channel 0, the adjusting-screw (1, having its threaded portion 0 fitted in the recess r, and provided with the threaded extension f and intermediate blank-neck, wand the jam-nut h, all as shown and described.
, In testimony whereofI have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the countyof Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 11th day of September, 1882.
