SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,014, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed September 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM GoLL- '11512, of Lockport, in the` county ot' Niagara and ceptacle can be lled easily, and from which the oil can be drawn readily.
The invention consists in thepccular construction 4and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter `more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,iormingapartof this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.

' The pail A, which can be made of wood or metal, has one side made dat, so that it can be placed very closely against a wall, tank, Svc. The cover B is lined in the top of the pail. The bail G is pivoted to the cover, and is provided with a wooden handle, D, semicircular in cross-section, (see Figs. l and 3,) and provided with a longitudinal groove, u', for the reception of the top of the bail. The handle is held `in place by bendsaJ in the bail, at the ends' of the handle. At the middle of the handle D the bail C forms a loop, E, projecting from the top ot" the handle.
A short tube, F, is secured in an aperture in the cover B, into which tube a plug or stopper, G, tits, which is provided with a handleloop, Gr'. A strainer, H, fitting in the tube F, is secured to a wire, H', the upper end of which is bent over to form a hook, H2, which is adapted to catch on the upper edge of the tube F and hold the strainer in place while the oil is being poured through it into the pail. is filled through the tube F, and the strainer H serves to prevent impurities and other solid foreign `matter from passing into the pail.
A tube, J, passes Vthrough the cover B to the bottom oi' the pail, and is provided at its u-ps per end with a handle, K. A threaded collar, L, is secured in the cover of the pail, and a threaded sleeve, M, scoured on the tube J,
screws into the said collar, so that by turning Y the tube J the same will be raised and lowered. The tube J is guided by two eyes, N, through which it passes, the said eyes heilig secured to a vertical piece of wood, 0, in the pail. The lower end of the tube J is provided with a packing, P, which is set into the tube. An annular packing, Q, on which the lower endof the tube J rests, is countersunk in the bottom of the pail, and is surrounded by ashort vertical collar, b, which projects slightly from the `upper surface of the bottom 0i' the pail, and is secured to a countersunk ring, d, which holds the said packing Q in place.
The collar b is provided with a series of ap- The faucet-tube R. which is held in the bottom of the pail and projects from the same, has its inner end turned upward so that the inner end projects slightly above the packing Q, as shown in Fig. 4.
` The tube J is provided, directly below the cover B, with a side aperture, f, directly below which a plug, g, is driven into the tube to prevent oil from runnihg down the tube. The tube J is also provided above the cover B with two vents, S and T, both of which are closed by ball-valves h andj, with or Without springs, or by any other suitable valves.
It' the pail` is made of wood, the inside is provided with a coating of a solution of glue to prevent the oil penetrating the wood.
The operation is as follows: When the pail is heilig filled through the tube F the air in the pail passes through-the aperture fin the tube J, raises the ball-valve j, and escapes through the vent T. When the lower end of the tube J rests on the packing Q the packings P and Q form a. close and tightjoint, and prevent the oil from passing into the faucettube R. If the tube J is turned in one direction, it will be raised, and the oil can pass from the pail into the faucet-tube R. and f'roin there passes through the tube J and the apertnrefinto the pail. The faucet proper is thnsin the inside of thel pail, but can be operated fronfthe outside. The eye E in the bail .C facilitates hanging the bail to a hook on a wall, tank, &e., the flat side of the pail resting against the said tank, &c. The pail can also be used t'or other liquids as well as for oil.
Having` thus fully described inyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenre l. The combination, with the pail A, ofthe handle D, semieircula-r in cross-section, and provided with the longitudinal groove a', and hinged bail C, having the bends a et, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the pail A, ofthe cover B, the filling-tube F, the strainer H,a nd the hooked wire H', substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
