MEANS FO R I ASTENING A HANDLE TO A PAIR OF WORK ENGAGING HEADS Filed July 15, 1953 Fig] 10 Frank E. .Sclrafi/d V INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 21, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MEANS FOR FASTENING A HANDLE TO A PAIR OF WORK ENGAGING HEADS 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in tools, particularly compound tools employin a plurality of work-engaging heads, and the principal ob- J'ect of the invention is to provide novel means for securing the heads together and for securing the handle of the tool thereto, this being so arranged that the handle may be readily removed and the body of the tool disassembled for the purpose of changing or replacing the heads.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and dependable operation, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of an arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: 1
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a group perspective view of the invention; and,
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the compound tool is designated enerally by the reference character Ill and embodies in its construction a substantially cylindrical body 12 which is provided at the opposite ends thereof with a pair of work-engaging heads l4, l6.
The invention is particularly intended for embodiment in a compound wrench for tightening or loosening the sink strainers, in which instance the heads l4, [6 may differ in arrangement so as to accommodate strainers of various types.
When so utilized, thetool also includes a pair of work-engaging members, specifically, nuts I8 which are slidably and rotatably positioned on the body [2 adjacent the respective heads [4, 16.
The essence of novelty of the invention resides in the construction of the body l2 and of attachment of an actuating handle 20 to the body, this bein so arranged that the body and handle may be readily disassembled for the purpose of changing or replacing the nuts l8.
Accordingly, the body [2 of the tool consists of apair of complemental sections 22, 24 having opposing surfaces 26 in abutment and provided with recesses 28 which coact to define a transverse I opening 28a in the body 12.
An enlarged end portion 30 of the aforementioned handle 29 is fitted in the opening 28a and a fastening element such as a screw 32, or the like, extends through registering apertures 34, 36, 38 which are formed in the body sections 22, 24 and in the handle portion 30, respectively.
In this manner the screw 32 ri -idly secures the body sections 22, 24 together and simultaneously secures the handle 20 to the body l2. However, by simply removing the screw 32, the handle 29 may be separated from the body and the body sections 22, 24 may be separated from each other, for the purpose of installing, removing or changin the work-engaging nuts l8.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In a compound tool, the combination of a substantially cylindrical body provided at the opposite ends thereof with a pair of work-engaging heads, said body comprising a pair of complemental sections having opposin surfaces in abutment, said sections being provided in their abutting surfaces with registering recesses defining an openin extending transversely through said body, a handle having one end portion thereof disposed in said opening, and a fastening element extendin longitudinally through said body and through said handle whereby to simultaneously secure the handle to the body and the sections of the body together.
2. The device as defined in claim 1 together with a pair of removable work-engaging members slidably and rotatably positioned on the respective sections between said handle and the respective work-engaging heads.
