This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements 1n wrenches, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the character herein described whereby sink strainers may be quickly, easily and conveniently installed or removed.
An important feature of the invention, therefore, resides in providing a wrench with a sink strainer engaging head, while another feature resides in the provision of a head or heads, which may selectively engage a strainer with three prongs, or four prongs, both of which are in customary use.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its expeditious operation and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement, and construction, of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a sink, showing the invention applied to the three pronged strainer thereof;
Figure 2 is an underside plan view of the three pronged strainer;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a sink with a four pronged strainer, showing the invention applied thereto;
Figure 4 is an underside plan view of the strainer shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the wrench per se, adapted for use on a. three pronged strainer;
Figure 6 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 6-6 in Figure 5 and illustrating the strainer engaging head separated from the wrench;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a four strainer engaging head;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a modified embodiment of the invention;
Figure 9 is a fragmentary top plan view of the modified embodiment, and
Figure 10 is a sectional detail taken substantially in the plane of the line Ill-l0 in Figure 9.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several viewsn Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more particularly to Figures 1-7 inelusive, the wrench is designated generally by the reference character 20 and embodies in its construction a substantially cylindrical body 22 pronged 1 Claim, (01. 81-90) I which is formed integrally with a laterally projecting' handle 24 at one endand with an outturned flange 26 at the other end.
A cup-shaped nut 28 is rotatably and slidably positioned on the body 22 and is sustained thereon by the flange 26 and the handle 24, it being understood that the central opening 30 in the nut 28 is sufliciently large so as to permit the nut to be passed over the handle 24 and installed on the body 22.
The nut 28 is provided with internal screwthreads to engage the external screw-threads 34 of a sink strainer 36, 38, as the case may be, and the body 22 is also provided with a polygonal socket 40 to removably receive a polygonal shank 42 of the strainer engaging head 44, or 46.
The head 44 is provided with three equally spaced radially disposed recesses 48 to receive the three prongs 50 of the strainer 36, and when the wrench is so applied to the strainer and the nut 28 tightened on the thread 34, the strainer 36 may be held stationary while another conventional wrench 52 is used for turning a nut 54 on the strainer thread 36a to either install or remove the strainer from the sink 56 as shown in Figure 1.
Alternatively, the head 44 may be separated from the wrench body 22 and replaced by the head 46 having four equally spaced radial recesses 58 therein to receive the four prongs 60 of the strainer 38. In this strainer, associated with a sink 62, a nut 64 may be installed on or removed from the strainer thread 34 by a conventional wrench 66 while the strainer itself is held against turning by the wrench 20.
Referring now to the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 8-l0 inclusive, the wrench herein is designated generally by the reference character 70 and embodies in its construction a substantially cylindrical body 12 having a laterally projecting handle 14 secured thereto by a screw 76, the body 12 also being provided with an out-turned flange 18.
A cup-shaped internally threaded nut is rotatably and slidably positioned on the body 12 and is retained thereon by the flange 18 and also by a snap ring82 which is removably seated in an annular groove 84 with which the body is equipped.
In this instance, the head 86 is formed integrally with the body 12 and is provided with four, relatively deep, radially spaced recesses 88 to receive a strainer with four prongs. and is also provided with three relatively shallow radially spaced recesses 90 to receive a strainer with only three prongs.
The shallow recesses 90 are off set angularly somewhat from the relatively deep recesses 88 and it will be apparent from the foregoing that in this embodiment of the wrench, the head 86 will accommodate a strainer with three prongs as well as a strainer with four prongs in a selective manner.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A wrench comprising a substantially cylindrical body provided at one end portion thereof with an annular groove, an out-turned annular flange provided at the other end of said body, a work engaging head provided on the end of the body adjacent said flange, a snap ring positioned in said groove, a work engaging nut rotatable and slidable on said body, said nut having a flanged end portion located between said snap ring and said annular flange, and a laterally projecting handle secured to the end of said body adjacent said snap ring.
