Description
p 1967 M. L. ADAMSON QUICK CHA NGE FACE PLATES FOR VICE JAWS Filed Aug. 25, 1964 ====i==iln ===E I NVENTOR.
BY 31 19 W W 1 V ATTORNEY.
7 I All United States Patent f 3,341,190 QUICK CHANGE FACE PLATES FOR VICE JAWS Melvin L. Adamson, 7939 W. Indianola Ave., Phoenix, Ariz. 85033 Filed Aug. 25, 1964, Ser. No. 391,881 Claims. (Cl. 269271) The present invention relates to a vice provided with removable face plates to engage a work part.
It is a well known fact that in the art of machine or metal working the use of a vice plays an important part. As will be evident, the vice must be capable of securing Work parts of varying forms and surface areas. It often happens that the conventional jaws fail to provide the required grip on the work part. The jaw face must therefore be changed or modified to secure the work part in a fixed position.
Face plates differing in construction are required to meet differences in the work part and in providing face plates that may be readily attached to a vice jaw and when attached, be held as an integral part of the vice jaw.
An object of the invention is to provide a face piece that may be quickly attached to a vice or removed for the substitution of a different jaw face.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vice jaw that by means of a simple operation may hold a face plate in firm overall contact with a jaw member.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of the invention. It will be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as may be required without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Referring to the drawings for more specific details of construction in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a vice showing face plates held in fixed relation to the jaws of a vice;
FIG. 2 is a top fragmentary view of a vice jaw with a face plate attached thereto;
FIG. 3 is a front elevational view of a face plate in contact with a vice jaw;
FIG. 4 is an end view of a jaw and face plate with the face plate removed as indicated in dotted lines;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged view taken on line 5-5 in FIG. 3;
FIG. 6 is a view taken on line 6-6 in FIG. 5;
FIG. 7 is a view taken on line 7-7 in FIG. 5; and
FIG. 8 is an enlarged top view showing a portion of a vice jaw and a face plate in contacting relation.
As shown in FIG. 1 the present invention is applicable to a vice indicated as a whole by reference character 10 and having a fixed jaw 11' and a movable jaw 11. The vice 10 may vary in construction and as shown, the jaw 11 is movable on guide tracks 12 integral with base 13. A hand crank 14 is provided for manual operation to move jaw 11 relative to fixed jaw 11'.
In accordance with the present invention the vice is provided with a supplemental jaw indicated as a whole by the reference character 15. This jaw 15 may, as shown, be secured to vice jaw 11 by means of screws 16' which extend through the jaw 15 into threaded holes in the vice jaw 11 to unite vice jaw and the supplemental jaw as movable unit with a supplemental jaw.
The supplemental jaw 15 or 15' comprises a plate portion 16 (see FIG. 5) having a V-guide 17 to slidably fit guide slot 18 in a face plate 19.
The V-guide 17 is provided with a movable section 21 intermediate the normal upper and lower ends 22 and 3,341,190 Patented Sept. 12, 1967 23 of V-guide 17. The movable section 21, which may be termed a locking member, is provided with a passage 24 which is elliptical in transverse cross section. Within said passage is a cam member 25. One end of the cam has a cylindrical portion 26 journaled in end 23 of V-guide 17. The opposite end of the cam is formed with cylindrical portion 27 journaled in end 22 of the V-guide 17. The portion 27 is formed with a hexagon socket 28 to receive an Allen wrench 29.
A face plate 19 to be used with the jaw 15 is as shown provided with guide slot 18 disposed on V-guide 17. When in position, wrench 29 is engaged with socket 28 and cam 25 is actuated to cause movable section 21 to engage a surface of guide slot 18 in face plate 19 causing the face plate to be locked in position with surface 31 of jaw 15 in firm overall contact with surface 32 of face plate 19. As will be noted, each face plate is formed with a clearance surface 33 bordering the guide slot to insure intimate contact with the entire remaining surface area of the face plate and jaw surface.
From the foregoing it will be evident that the present invention provides a supplemental jaw that may be employed quickly and conveniently secure face plates for use in holding various forms of work parts.
Although the present showing is directed to a supplemental jaw to be secured to a conventional form of vice, it is evident that a vice may be formed with each jaw formed with a V-guide similar to the present guide 17 to receive and secure a face plate.
As is well known, it is important to be able to provide a vice so constructed and arranged as to hold a face plate and when so held a surface of the face plate must be secured in overall surface to surface contacting relation as accomplished by the present combination of cooperating parts.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown and described, it is to be understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
