UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LINDSAY B. MONUTT, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
BENDlNG-lVIACHlNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,919, dated December 12, 182.
Application filed June 27, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom itmay concern:
Beit known thatI, LINDSAY B. MCNUTT, of Asiitabnla, in the county of Ashtabula and State'ci'Oh-io, have invented a new. and Imbending-machine as arranged for the use of steam or other power to operate it, a part of the frame being sectioned. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line as w, and Fig. 4 is a planview as arranged for being worked by hand. Fig. 5 is a detail view in side elevation of the cross-head and its connections.
The essential feature of the invention consists of a former and attachments wherewith a pair of carriage-shafts or couple of poles, pole-bars, or other like pieces of carriage or wagon stock may be secured by one set ofapparatns and be bent at the same time.
The former consists of the bar a,'not quite as long as the shafts b or other pieces to be bent, the two upper corners of the said bar being rabbeted, as shown in Fig. 3, to suit the form and size of the piecesb to be placed thereonone each side of the rib or tongue 0 between the rabbets. The bottoms of these rabbets are shaped to the longitudinal curved form to which theshaftsb are to be bentin one direction, as shown by theline at d, Fig. 1. At the lefthand end of this former, which terminates at e, (dotted in Fig. 1 and solid line Fig. 2,) a steel "strap,f, is attached in the plane of each side of the tongue 0, said straps extending as much beyond the end of the former as the required length of the heel bend g of the shafts. At their outer ends these straps terminate in shoulders h. with hook-points At the opposite end, where the tip-bendj is to be made,
there is a steel strap, k, lying over each rabbet and extending from the end of the former along it about as far as the length of the tip bend to a point where the said straps hook onto a short cross-head, l, traversing the former in a slot under'the rib c, and with which a gib,
m, and key a are arranged to draw said straps,
which are shouldered at 0, against the ends of the shafts, and subject themto an upsetstrain against the shoulders h of the strapsf at the other end of the former. Two clamp frames or formers, 10,.shaped on the under side to correspond with the upper side of the tip bend, are hinged at q to the shoulders 0. so as to act on the upper side of the shafts to press them down onto the bed of the former by the rain t of a steam, compressed-air, or hydraulic cylinder, a, located over the bed-frame V, on which the former is placed for bending the shafts. These two clamp-formers p are coupled together on the top of rib c by the strap-hinge plate urfor most of their length, but near the face ends a gap is left, through which the button 00 connects with them after the formers have been pressed hometo hold the shafts until they set. Buttons y and z are employed to fasten on the shafts by their respective eccentric levers a, suitably fixed to studs rising up from the former, and the former is confined laterally by the clamps b, which are also the formers for the heel bends g of the shafts, said clamps being arranged on the cross-ways c of the bench to close on the former and the shafts preparatory to the action of rain t, and being operated by the levers cl and toggles e, to the latter of which suitable lever-connections are to be made for shifting them up in the positions represented by the dotted lines, Fig. 3, to release the clamps, and down into the positions of the full lines to cause the clamps to grip the former. The former being secured by these clamps and by the ram t the pointed head f of a ram, g, actuated by a steam, compressedair, or other cylinder, h, is driven forward between the ends of the two shafts, as represented in Fig. 2, to bend them against the forms of clamps b, after which the rods k pivoted to the sides of the former at i, are hooked onto the hooks 'i to hold the bends 9 until set. V
j represents a rest pivoted at 1 between the beams of the bench V and containing-rollers is for the former to rest on, which is thrust up into the position represented in dotted lines, Fig. 1, by the I lever m and pusher n for the discharge of the former and the bent pieces on it after clamp I) and ram t are withdrawn, which may then be quickly effected by booking the former a c to the ram g by any suitable hooked rod or chain and quickly opening thervalve for the quick withdrawal of ram g,
whereby the former will be shot forward over the ram-cylinder h onto a bench, suitably lo cated to receive it.
By the use of the cam-levers A B, Fig. 4, sockets k attached to the steel straps f and the hooks o, to connect said straps to the camlevers, the heel bends 9 may be made by hand, the clamp-formers b and the ram 9 being dispensed with.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- l. The eccentric levers a, theclamps b b, the bench having crossways c, the levers d, and the toggles '6, combined as and for the purpose specified:
4 2. The combination, with rabbeted bar a, ribbed at 0, of the sockets k, overlapping the rabbets of bar, the cam-levers B, and the hooks 'v 'v', engaging shoulders on the bottom arm of said levers, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the bar at, having the two upper corners rabbeted in a curved form to suit the pieces to be bent, and provided between the rabbets with a rib, c, of the steel straps f, one arranged on each side of the rib, extending the required length of the heel bend and terminating in hookpointed shoulders h, whereby the heel bend is formed, as described.
4. The combination, with the straps shouldered at 0, of the couple-clampspp, hinged at q to said shoulders, the ram t, and the frame 1), as shown and described.
5. The combination, with the bench V, of the restj, pivoted between the beams thereof and provided with rollers k, the lever m, and, the pusher n, whereby theformer and bent pieces maybe raised, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination, with the bar a, having a rib, c, a slot under the rib and a rabbet on each side of the rib, of the steel straps k, lying over each rabbet and extending the length of the top bend, and the cross-head I, connected with the straps, arranged in said slot under the rib and shouldered, at 0, whereby the top bend may be Iormed, as described.
