SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,756, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed May 12, 1862. (No model.) I
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT S.VAN PEL'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools or instruments for cutting paper or other similar fabrics; and the object of the improvement is to enable such an instrument to cut the two adjacent sides of a rectangular figure simultaneously and at a single motion.
The annexed drawings represent a hand-tool in which the cutters are Worked by a cross motion on a common pivot, as scissors are ordinarily worked, and it is adapted to sever at the same operation the two attached sides of a indexpages of a book.
Figures I, II, and III are respectively a plan, an end view, and a side elevation, showing an arrangement of the several parts which permits of their being readily taken apart to be. sharpened or adjusted, or for other purposes.
The chief cutting-blades a and b are wider at their farther ends than at or near the fulcrum, so that they will begin to cut at the ends first. The lower blade, I), has an extension cutting-piece, c, secured at a right angle to it at the end. The cutter c carries a pivot, (Z, on which works a corresponding upper cutter, e, that is operated in unison with the upper shearblade, to, by the pinf, that is secured to the shear-blade and passes through a slot in the and placing the angle of the rectangular cuttersat the point where the adjacent sides meetof the coupon, for instance, which it is desired to cut from a bond-both sides of the coupon are severed on the closing of the ban dles of the shears, the closing of the main blades at and 12 causing also the closing of the rectangular blades 0 and c by means of the pin fon the blade a carrying with it through its motion the supplementary blade 6. The guard g protects the adjacent points of the cutters when closed, and serves as a guide to the moving point of the upper cutter when it is being used.
The arrangements and proportions of the several parts may be varied in accordance with the views of those skilled in the arts to which it appertains, the principle of my invention being the operation of the two sets of cutters by a sing e movement of the motive power to sever simultaneously the adjacent sides of a rectangular figure.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the cuttiugblades a and b, ot the cutters c and e, placed and operated at right angles therewith, substantially as described, the cutter 6 being pivoted at d and worked through its slot by the pinfon the blade at.
2. The combination of the cutters a and I), made widest at the points remote from their fulcrum, and .the supplementary cutters c and 0, with the pivot d, the pinf, that passes into the slot of c, and the guard g, substantially in the manner described.
GILBERT S. VAN PELT.
