Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOLLIS wfMoonE, OF oLEAN, NEW YORK.
PLATFORM-GEAR FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,711, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed August 3, 1882. (Nomodeld 1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLIS W. MOORE, of ()lean, in the county of (Jattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriages and Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains vto make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in carriages and wagons, and more particularly to spring-platforms therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a, device of this character which shall combine simplicity and cheapness of construction with etficiency and durability in use.
With these objects in view myiuvention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will he hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing represents in perspective View a spring-platform embodying my invention.
The futchell A consists of a single strip of metal bent into the required shape, its forward ends being outwardly deflected and bent back parallel with the contiguous portions of the strip to form the ears B, which are provided with registering perforations O to receive the pins D and E, to which the pole or shaft eyes an'd'the springs are respectively secured. The inner end of said futchell is supported by a saddle'block, F, which is secured to the crossbar G, and which is itself mounted on the central transverse spring of the vehicle.
The fifth-wheel or circle may be of any desired form and construction, and is supported on a frame-work composed of a series of crossbars, H, secured to the diverging arms of the futchell by clips I, as shown in the drawing. by bolts, or by any equivalent means of fastening.
By forming the futchell from a single strip of metal of the required stiffness and having its-outer or forward ends adapted to have the pole or shaft eyes and the springs attached to, them, economy of material results, strength is secured, and greater safety from accident is insured.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but that I hold myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what; I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spring-platform, a futchell consisting of a'single piece of bar metal bent into the required shape, the ends of the bar being bent back parallel with the sides, and pins inserted through the sides and rearwardly-hent ends for the attachment of the pole or shaft eyes and the-springs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HOLLIS \V. MOORE.
