UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM H. MILLER, OF BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY.
COOKING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,706, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed February 18, 1882. (No model.)
used refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective side view, showing the side and top in broken sections, and the front doors off, to give a complete view of the grate adjusted to its highest position forthe purpose of giving the heat direction over the top of the oven. Fig. 2 is a perspective side view, showing the side and top in broken sections, and the front doors removed, to give acomplete .-view of the grate adjusted to its lowest position for the purpose of giving the heat simultaneous action entirely around the oven. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the grate removed from the stove, showing the mechanism for raising and lowering the same.
The grate is referred to by the letters A. Passing through the ash-pan or recess marked G is a crankshaft, (referred to by the letter F to which is attached an eccentricblodk, (letteredE.) By moving thecrank toward the! of the stove the eccentric block E will lift. 9 grate A to its highest position, and the block E will be locked in position by the lug lettered T, as shown in Fig. 3, and will hold the grate in position. (hen the grate A is in its highest position the heat will be directed over the top of the oven 0, (referred to more fully by the letters S R H P.) By turning the crank toward the front of the stove the grate A will be lowered, as shown in Fig. 2. The heat from the lower part of the grate will be drawn through the bottom draft-course (marked J) and the rear course, (marked K,) and will act against the bottom of the oven (lettered S) and the rear, (lettered 1%,) while the heat from the top of the fire I will pass through the upper draft-course and act against the front wall of the oven (lettered H) and its top, (lettered P,) thus acting simultaneously all around the oven, passing out through the uptake, (lettered L.) The ends of the grate A are provided with projections, (lettered D,) which engage with the tonguesor projections referred to bythe letters 0, forming grooves in removable side plates or lurnace doors (lettered B) for guiding the motion of the grate and holding it firmly in position. The side platesB are made movable for the purpose of allowing the grate to be taken out and renewed. The letters I refer to the top plate of the stove, letters N to-the side plates, M to the feet, Q to the hearth. In this stove the damper should be placed to act in the lower draft-course.
Having thus explained the construction and operation of iny'improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1; The vertically-movable grate, in'combination with a cook-stove having lines at the front, top, bottom, and rear of the oven, directly connecting with each other, whereby the heat may be directed over the top alone, or simultaneously all around theoven, as may be required, substantially as specified.
2. The vertically-sliding grate having projections atopposite ends, in combination with the side doors or plates at the ends of the firebox, the said doors or plates being provided with guides, in which said projections are adapted to move, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the fire-box of a cookstove, the guides at the ends thereof, the sliding grate and the eccentric block mounted on a crank-shaft, whereby the grate may be ver tically adjusted, substantially as specified.
In testimony to the foregoing I have hereunto affixed my hand this 13th day of September, 1881.
WILLIAM H. MILLER.
