JOHN N. SQUIER OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
-GUN-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,374, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed July Be it known that 1,.10HN N SQUIER, of J ackson, Jackson county, State of Michigan, have Gun-Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to. the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part This invention is in thenature of an improvement in gun-stocks,- and the invention consists in a gun-stock with a flat steel spring fitted to its butt,-so that'the ends ofsaid spring may have lateral or end play, as is more particularly described hereinafter.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings,
Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is-a cross-section, taken in the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 isa plan of spring removed; Fig. 5, a side elevation of stock and hood, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate parts in the several figures. 7 x
The purpose of this invention'is to protect the shoulder of the user of a gun from the shock of the recoil of the gun when fired. It
like
gun results in laming the shoulder of the user, the injury proceeding from the shock communicated by the recoil of the gun. Various devices have been-applied to gun-stocks 'to prevent injury from this cause, ngost of which are in the nature of cushions of india-rubber or a combination-ofspiral springs. By my invention it is believed a simple and efiicagrin-stock or marring its appearance. To that end 1 construct my gun-stock with aflat sprm g, A, of steel or other suitable material, and of a shape and size corresponding ordinary metal heel-plate of the stock may then be removed from the gun and the curvature in the end of the stock or butt may be deepened to some extent.
vTo the butt of the stock, at the ends of the curvature a, are secured in any suitable manwith its ends terminating in tongues or ten- 15, 1882. (No model.)
one o, is secured to the butt of the stock by inserting these tongues or tenons beneath the plates B and into the spaces or openings 1), by which means the springis confined to the butt of the stock, so that it cannot he accidentally detached therefrom, and yet its ends can have free lateral play.
Now, when the gun is provided with an elastic spring, substantially as is hereinhefore described, and the gun is raised to the shoulder for the purpose of firing it, the spring A is brought immediately in contact with the shoulder and is interposed between the shoulder and the stock, so that when the gun is fired this spring A will yield itselasticity by bending in the curvature (1, thereby acting substantially as an elastic cushion, taking the shock of the recoil and preserving the shoulder from injury. As the spring A by the force of the recoil is bent inward the ends of the spring, having free lateral play, are withdrawn to some extent from beneath the plates B, thereby permitting the elasticaction of the spring. Immediately after the firingthespring recovers its normal position by its own resilient force. If desired, this spring A may be padded,.as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or it may be plated and finished in any suitable manner, and if padded a leather hood, 0, should be provided to inclose the butt of the stock and cover the spring and its pad. This hood may be permanently secured to the stock, or it may be fixed thereto by means of a lacingstring, so as to render it easily removable. The hood, however, will be found useful under all circumstances, particularly when passing through nnderbrush, to prevent the spring from catching.
, Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,,isi 1. A gun-stock the butt whereof is provided with the usual or a greater or less curvature, combined with a flat metallic spring extending across such curvature and held in place by end plates attached to the stock, substantially as and for the vpurpose described.
' 2. The combination, with a gun'stock provided with the butt recess or curve a, of a flat spring extending across such recess and having end tongues and held in place by plates secured over such tongues to the stock, subspring, A,"secured0ver a recess or curve in to stantially as and for the purpose described. l the butt of a stock and a padded covering for 3. The combination of a gun-stock havinga. said spring, substantially as and for the purbutt recess 01- curve, the flat spring A, propose described. vided with tongues c, and secured to said stock over or across its recess by plates B with I JOHN SQUIER' the hood 0, substantially as and for-the pur- Witnesses; pose described. GEO. H. COLLEY,
4. The combination, in a gun-stock, of a flat HENRY W. MOULTON.
