1 Claim.
The present invention refers to a spray burner for heavy oils, operated by steam jet.
Burners of heavy oils actuated by steam, in use up to the present time, have the great inconvenience that their use requires long experience and a profound knowledge oftheir specific characteristics. This follows because of the necessity of the adequate regulation of the mixture'of oil and steam, with the object of obtaining a combustion which gives the maximum result.
The burner which constitutes the object of the present invention patent, on the other hand, has the great advantage of not requiring any specialized knowledge for its use and control. The only control required is a key which regulates the intensity of the combustion, as the regulation of the proportion of the oil-steam mixture is effected in a completely automatic manner.
The new burneris composed substantially of an oil tank or deposit with a constant level, communicating with a vertical pipe which has a corresponding nozzle, and coinciding with the mouth of this nozzle, and at right angles to it, the mouth of another nozzle which is joined to the steam feed pipe by means of a pass cock.
In this way when the pass cock is open the steam escapes through the beforementioned nozzle, and draws the oil up to the outlet of the adjacent nozzle and thereafter mixes with it. The quantity of oil aspirated, and in consequence the intensity of the combustion, will depend exclusively on the amount of steam which passes through the regulating key.
Eventually, the zone of coincidence of the two nozzles may be surrounded by an atomizing cage, whichtends to collaborate in the function of the mixture of the steam and the combustible. This atomizing cage in its simplest form, is composed of a tube with many perforations, the axis of which isorientated in accordance with the direction of the outlet of the mixture.
Another characteristic of the new burner is that the steam feed pipe passes through the deposit of combustible of a constant level and the result of this is, that the temperature of the oil is raised and a much better strength of combustionis obtained.
Other characteristics and construction details of the invention may be appreciated with the help of the drawings which accompany the present specification and claim. The drawings represent one of the preferred forms of the practical realization of the fundamental idea but which, logically, may be varied. The drawings are referred to in the following description with the 2 object of enlarging and clarifying the idea, and at the same time demonstrating the practicability of the invention.
The drawing represents a longitudinal View, in
section, of the burner.
In the corresponding description use will be made of numbers to identify distinct parts of the whole, it being understood that the same numbers indicate the same elements or their equivalents.
The burner is composed of a tank I or deposit of combustible, the tank being filled by means of the inlet 2, the mouth 3 of which is covered by the stopper 4 which is operated by the arm 5 of the float 6.
Adjacent to the before mentioned tank I is found the chamber I. This latter has, passing through it, the conduit 8 which starts at the lower point 8 of the tank I and terminates in the tube It of the head piece of the burner II by means of the corresponding connecting flange I2. Connected to and continuing the tube It] is nozzle I3 for discharging the petroleum.
The steam feed pipe is is led through the tank I, as a means of heating the combustible, and when it reaches the chamber 1, it is connected with the pass cock I5. It is thereafter prolonged by means of the pipe I6 and the flange H to a second tube I8 of the head piece II. In the chamber "I the combustible in the tube 8 is still further heated by the heat coming from the adjacent tube I6.
The tube I8, which is provided on top with an inspection cap I9, has its outlet in the steam nozzle 29.
The two nozzles I3 and 29 coincide in the interior of the atomizing cage 2I which is composed of a tube perforated in many places, and the whole assembly is lodged in the interior of the fire guide tube 22 which has an outlet 23 facing the combustion oven, not shown in the drawing.
The manner of functioning of the burner just described is as follows:
The apparatus which regulates the flow of the combustible into the tank I maintains the same at a constant level in the interior of the deposit I as well as in the communicating tube I 8. Thus, when the steam pass cock I5 is opened, the steam escapes through the nozzle 2D, drawing up the combustible through the other nozzle I3, and being mixed with it by means of the atomizing cage, and thereafter the mixture is forced to the outside of the guide tube 22, where, as there is an open flame, the combustion takes place.
It is desired to make it quite clear, that the.
preceding description has been one of the preferred forms of realization, and it is not intended to limit thereby the invention in any way, the description being merely demonstrative and given only as an example.
Any number of modifications of form, construction and detail may be introduced, without exceeding in any way the limits of the invention, such as are clearly defined and specified in the claim that follows.
I claim:
An oil burner comprising, in combination, a tank in which the oil to be burned is located, the said tank having sides and a bottom surface; an oil tube having two open ends, one of said open ends of said oil tube being connected to one of said sides of said tank adjacent the bottom surface of said tank so that said one open end of said oil tube communicates with the interior of said tank, said oil tube having a substantially right-angle bend intermediate the ends thereof so as to form a first leg and a second leg of said oil tube, the first leg of said oil tube terminating in said one open end thereof and being mounted in a substantially horizontal position and said second leg terminating in the other open end. of said oil tube being mounted in a substantially vertical position, due to said rightangle bend formed in said oil tube, whereby said other open end of said oil tube opens in a substantially upward direction; means for supplying oil to said tank located in one of the sides of said tank and mounted in a position distant from said bottom surface of said tank; float valve means operatively connected to said means for supplying said oil to said tank for maintaining a constant desired level of oil in said tank; a steam tube passing in a substantially horizontal direction through said oil tank, so that the steam in the steam tube heats the oil in said tank, said steam tube being located above said first leg of said oil tube and having a portion thereof extending in a direction parallel to but spaced from said second leg of said oil tube, the said steam tube having an outlet end; an oil burner head piece to which said other open end of said oil tube is connected and to which said outlet end of said steam tube is connected, the said head piece having passages therein which respectively form extensions of said oil tube and said steam tube, and the said passages each having outlet ends for the passage of the oil and steam respectively therethrough; a first nozzle threadedly connected to said outlet end of said passage forming an extension of said oil tube, the said first nozzle being mounted in a substantially vertical position and having an outlet end at the top thereof so that the oil will rise vertically therethrough; a second nozzle threadedly connected to said outlet end of said passage forming an extension of said steam tube, the said second nozzle being supported in a substantially horizontal position and itself having an outlet end which is located adjacent to but slightly spaced from said outlet end of said first nozzle with said outlet end of said second nozzle partially overlying said outlet end of said first nozzle; and a cylindrical atomizer cage having a plurality of perforations extending therethrough and being fixedly connected to said oil burner head piece, the said atomizer cage surrounding said outlet ends of said first and second nozzles and being coaxial with the latter, whereby the oil-steam mixture, produced by the steam which escapes from said second nozzle drawing the oil up through said first nozzle, expands and passes through said perforations of said atomizer cage so as to be atomized thereby.
