Description

June 22 R' E' NORRIS PUSH STICK Filed Jan. 28' 1952 INVENTOR .RuSSeZZ EHA/'Orr IS ATTQRNEYs BY Mw Patented June 22, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE PUSH STICK Russell E. Norris, Endicott, N. Y. Application January 28, 1952, Serial No. 268,562
1 Claim. l
This invention relates to a device for use in pushing a board over a jointer or the like.
In the use of jointers, Shapers and other woodworking machines, the manual pressing and moving of a small piece of wood over the table and past the rotating cutters involves a very great risk to the hands of the operators. While pusher devices have been developed which include a plate with an abutment at one end to engage the rear end of the board, these pusher devices cannot be used when the wood is disposed on an edge or when the end of the wood extends beyond the table.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a device for use in pushing a piece of wood over the table of a jointer which can be used for pushing a long or short piece of wood, either atwise or edgewise.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which will eliminate any danger to the hands of the operator in using the jointer and will provide for the smooth and proper cutting of the wood and to lessen the Vibration felt by the operator.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation partly broken away of a conventional jointer having a pusher stick associated therewith constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the pusher stick showing the same used in pushing a piece of wood with the edge lowermost.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the pusher stick.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates generally a conventional jointer embodying a table I I and a rotary cutter I2. A longitudinal upright fence or guide I3 is also disposed above the table I I at one longitudinal edge of the latter. In order to provide a means whereby a piece of wood W may be pushed over the surface of the table II and past the cutter I2 without danger of the user or operator cutting his hands or i fingers, I have provided a pusher member generally designated as I4. The pusher member I4 comprises a handle I5 having formed integral with the forward end thereof a block I6. The block I6 is polygonal in transverse section, and
Cil
2 the forward end of the block I 6 indicated by the number Il is disposed on an oblique angle with respect to the length of the handle I and the block I6.
Cushioned friction member I3 is xed as by cement or other adhesive material to the forward end Il of the block I6 and is preferably formed with a ribbed lower side I9. The cushion member It is preferably formed of sponge rubber and provides a resilient friction means engageable with a surface of the wood W, which is adapted to frictionally be held against movement on the surface of the wood W which is engaged thereby.
Where the wood W is to be planed or cut on one face thereof, the piece of wood is disposed atwise on the table II, and the pusher member Ill is disposed on the upper side of the wood W, as shown in Figure 1. The handle I5 is grasped in one hand and downward and forward pressure is then applied to the handle and the cushion member I8 so that the latter will frictionally grip the wood surface.
Where an edge of the wood is to be trimmed, the wood is disposed edgewise on the table II after the manner shown in Figure 2, with one face of the wood bearing against the fence I3. The pusher member is then pressed against the outer arris or corner of the wood so that the cushion member I8 will partly engage on the upper edge of the wood and partly on the outer side of the wood. In this manner, the pusher member is disposed on an oblique angle to the fence so that pressure applied to the pusher member will hold the wood atwise against the fence and will also exert a downward pressure on the wood so that the lower edge of the wood will be in contact with the table I I.
This device may be made with the handle and block out of wood and the cushion member I8 formed out of sponge rubber or the like and will provide a factor of safety for the user so that the user will not have his hand and fingers closely adjacent the revolving cutter I2. The wood can be held by this pusher member rmly on the table so that the cutter will plane the lower face or edge of the wood smoothly.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A pusher for use in pushing long or short pieces of wood over a jointer table, comprising a handle, a block formed integrally with said handle at one end thereof, said block having an obliquely in-- clined forward end, and a relatively thick, vibration absorbing, and frictional Work engaging deformable, rubber body fixed on said forward end at an obtuse angle thereto, whereby said pad engages the pieces to be pushed in flush relation when the handle is inclined in pushing position, the thickness of said deformable body being such that engagement of said deformable body on a corner of the Wood Will dispose a portion of said deformable body on one edge and one face of the wood to thereby evenly distribute pressure on one edge and an adjacent face of the Wood.
